Can Trump get a third term?

I suppose it is not very kind of me to take up the issue of a third term for President Trump. After all, the obsessive Trump haters are already in the advanced stages of an hysterical breakdown. They are far beyond the hair-on-fire stage. I cannot think of anything that could worsen their derangement than … a third term for Trump (which ain’t gonna happen, by the way).
The perma-pissed Trump-haters have not yet gotten over the fact that Trump won an impressive victory in 2025. (Hell, they have not gotten over 2016). They are hoping beyond hope that they can blunt Trump’s agenda by having Democrats take control of the House in 2026. They are already predicting it … counting on it.
Conventional wisdom suggests that Trump is limited by the 22nd Amendment. That was certainly the intent of the Amendment – and the language seems quite clear.
Here is what the 22nd Amendment says.
“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by the Congress and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.”
Regardless … Tennessee Congressman Andy Ogles has introduced a bill to amend the Constitution with this language.
“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice”.
If you read Ogles’ Bill carefully, you would see that it extends a third term only to a President who is elected to two nonconsecutive terms. If a President serves and initial two consecutive terms, he or she would be term limited. In other words, the Ogles’ Amendment would not apply to Presidents Bush or Obama. They are done. It would seem to allow Biden to come back for two more consecutive terms – and that could not happen under any circumstances.
I only mention this legislation because a number of talking heads on the left are discussing it as if it were a real plan … a possibility. They advance it as part of their evergreen political narrative that Trump sees himself as a king – and is conniving to remain in office in perpetuity. They allege this bill is part of the plan. All nonsense, of course.
I have no idea why Ogles introduced this legislation. Publicity? Curry favor with Trump? But I can safely assure those on the left that there is not a chance … as in none – that Trump will serve more than his current four-year term. The Constitution will not be amended.
So, take this bit of advice and put your spin on this one where you store all those other bullcrap narratives – such as Russian conspiracies … Hunter laptop as a Russian hoax … insurrection … coup attempts … political cult … etc., etc., etc.
So, there ‘tis.
Well, that did not take long. Trump only floated the issue last week. The supplicants stand ready.
Democrats should only get one term. The GOP should get four
The law is clear on the number of terms one person is allowed to serve as POTUS. And that was set at two terms back when FDR had served three terms and he had won a fourth bit died soon after his fourth Inauguration.
Larry is right on that subject. Also, it’s a fool’s errand for a representative in the House to initiate any bill that is meant to amend the amendment that limits the number of lifetime terms as POTUS to two. Greater minds from both parties reasoned that two terms max is a sufficient enough time for one person’s ability given the demands of the office. What possible reason does the congressman have that is weighty enough to justify Congress’ taking a detour from the urgent business at hand.
The motion does not deserve a seconding much less discussion, but here we are in discussion on a subject that is moot and dead in the water.
To say such an idea is laughable is giving its writer to much consideration and its supporters should know better. It’s a sad reflection on the whole body of the caucus that this thing is out in the public press.
Larry, this is one instance when the right was so wrong that given your usual MO even you can objectively see the facts. Right off you see it’s ridiculous and a nonstarter. Good for you, this time.
However, you may not appreciate the fact that this issue is not an outlier in the Republican play book. This level of outrageousness is indicative of thinking going on in your party and within Trump’s administration.
Who with any common sense (Trump’s own words describing himself) believes that the uproar he has initiated will have the desired effects that his promises in the campaign indicated, Should he have desired chaos, loss of departmental function, and fear that our systems in place will fail. The influx of replacement employees and rooting out of those judged possibly dis loyal to Trump endangers what Trump/Musk advertise, cost efficiency.
If Trump promised a smooth transition from Biden Government to Trump Government he has not held up his end.
Just for starters his campaign rhetoric denied he knew anything about Project 2025. Now he has nominated the primary authors of the Project to positions in his cabinet, as well as his bringing to fruition the tenants proposed by the authors publishing the Project.
You in your commentaries have written that you wanted to disabuse anyone from the idea that Project 2025 would be a blueprint for Trump 2.0.
In fact when questioned about the Project’s points you in effect supported its points.
Real time wild experimentation that tests our government’s democracy for strength in chaos and direct attacks from the top and within by Trump’s billionaire cronies.
The strong objective observer is keen to see how fairness and justice plays out. Who stands to profit most from this process that puts our Constitutional Democracy at risk? We know who! During the pandemic our wealthiest citizens’ personal income increased by 2 & 3 fold in most cases. That increase came off the backs of regular folks like you and me.
Project 2025, tax relief for the wealthy, and Trump’s tariffs to come will boost inflation through Trump’s term and bust the economy that otherwise was coming out of the pandemic produced recession.
Your MO is predicated on your personal belief that you are informed and knowledgeable to a greater degree that almost everyone else in America, and that’s when you are being you are being modest.
The problem with believing you have all the answers for those questions others don’t know enough to ask is that your answers are not altogether correct in the relevant context from which facts are found. Facts are the molecules and atoms of life and where truth is precious and few. Those who seek truth must revel in the search and not become distracted by others selling the so called truth. A tool required in the search is a strong moral compass with its needle pointing to true North.
Neglecting to own a compass like that folks will tell a story as they see it through the filters of one’s perspective. On the other hand with a strong moral compass in use the same story is told without partisan falters and all the facts left in tact. Which of the two versions is preferred and used for its base when it’s retold indicates whether you trust your filters or if a story’s facts are what one seeks.
My aim is not to shame, but to ferret out of the information swamp any facts with which the true picture comes clear.
I would have fully opposed such a proposition if the 2020 had not happened. Given that Trump was robbed of his 2020 win, I’d say he deserves it. But not for any other candidate whether Rep or Dem.
Although I am a Trumpstr, I would have to say lets see how the American people view things over the next 2 years first.
No matter though, Vance would be just like Obama to Biden as Vance would pick up the ball and run with it.
For all sakes of argument though, I would say NO ONE IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICE DESERVES AN EXTRA TERM
MORE THAN TRUMP.
For all the useless crap the Democrats put this man through, he should get 4 more terms!
Baiting the Trump derranged, you gotta love it,
This article gets a Stop The Spin (STS) rating of 1. While the article is truthful and there does not appear to be any spin regarding the subject matter, here is why it gets a 1 rating:
1) The article is snarky and a bit immaturely and trashy in its writing, and with regard to fellow Americans seeks to maintain a division of We The People in a time when the most powerful tool we have on the world state is unity.
2) Based on the first ten days of the Trump Administration, the number of law suits, illegal funding acts, air disasters, tariffs, inflation due to tariffs, increased food prices, government chaos, declines in veteran health services, cuts in programs such as School Nutrition, wealth gap growth, destroyed careers, job positions not filled, appointments not made and the revolving door of appointments, and declines in our world relationships, dirtier air and water, etc. most likely Trump would not be elected to a third term anyway, as well as his Republican Party being voted out. The test will be 2026, and Trump may just be the Dem best ally. Can the Dems get their big tent act together and stick to kitchen issues, relate better to mainstream America, win local and state elections, win middle America women, and keep their left wing under control as their recessive gene, so as to move back to center square and win back dormant voter base and Independents as well as GOPs who freshly hate the Trump GOP? Larry seems to forget that our government has always been a pendulum. GOP will most likely run Vance which is Trump 3.0, sort of like MicroSoft Windows where each revisions costs more!
I wonder if Larry can write an honest article about the first ten days of Trump and the issues mentioned in item 2? Probably not, but I digress…
If history repeats, by 2028 Dems, Indies, Unaffs, and also some GOPs will be so exhausted from Trump chaos that the likeliness of a Dem POTUS and Congress increases and is plausible.
Until then, Larry will have two years too find meaningless issues like the one in this article to be snarky and release his hateful venom on the party that voted in his social security check and his medical insurance and many other goodies his generation enjoys. And then another two years until he goes full blown ballistic hate mode.
So there ’tis. You have the full truth. You decide!
And maybe while Larry is busy writing about the first ten days, he can write about Trump cutting off funds to USAID which was run by Ivanka in his first administration and prevents many trapped in war zones from starving, many mom’s in Africa medicine so as to not pass on aids to their children, and most of all, contributes greatly to the value of women across the globe. And then there is the impacts that were announced by Canada this weekend at * https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tu7ix4u8qhE* which will for sure drive up your home budget at least 10%. And just google “Newsbreak, Trump admits prices won’t come down” and “you may suffer from my tariffs” read what google finds for you!
And who will gladly fill the void of Trump’s slashing and isolationism?? CHINA! WELCOME THE RISE OF CHINA!!!
Trump’s first ten days have done more to damage Americans than any other POTUS. 2026 will be very interesting!
Write about the American joys of tariffs Larry!!!
More truth, there ’tis, you decide!
Trump just revoked deportation protections for vz immigrants, around 600k. About half reside in FL. Welcome to the machine, pbp-ers like The Dumper, joe n larry. At last, Larry, the job market is opening up fir you!!!
300k out of your economy, oh boy!!!
I spell my name: different all the time. Because it amuses me.
Many will lose jobs. I assume your “vz” is Venezuelan? Or is it Verizon? Canada, Mexico, and China are not just F’ing around. MAGA is about to become much poorer, but it was all a scam by the rich to get their idiot in power so they can make more money. There is already a substantial “MAGA remorse” group growing. They will need therapy once disaster deprograms them back to reality! Maybe Larry can tell them of the good ole days!
I wonder if Larry will write about this?
Frank Danger …. Everything you write it is for self amusement. Are you under some delusion that you are having an impact.? LOL
I dunno Larry, doubtful. As I have told you, I write for myself and it’s the journey, not the arrival and certainly not for applause, like you. Otherwise, I would swim in friendlier waters. How are you doing after 40 years? How’s the book? I see you really moved up the popularity list: “Best Sellers Rank: #1,861,960 in Kindle Store (See Top 100 in Kindle Store)
#76,267 in Politics & Social Sciences (Kindle Store)” Oh my. Looks like you gave up getting reviews…… Can’t to get a family member or friend to chum those waters? Only 18 left, but more on the way. There’s used versions for sale already, a real keeper.
Frank Danger …Got it. At least you know you write for yourself — and maybe to bicker with a few souls, like me. You again misrepresent me. I do not write for applause. I write to inform. Not for the applause or snarky criticism — and my satisfaction comes when folks say things like “I never knew that.” I get very good reviews from folks you actually read the book. Regarding the book, we have held off on marketing until Spring for reasons you may or may not understand. But … you rinterest in me –as obsessive as it may be — is very flattering.
Oh yeah, and that’s why you count how many read……
I have said I write for myself as many times as you have asked.
Sorry, the applause part was my opinion based on your recounting, on a few occasions, your success based on viewing and reading numbers that you seem to track. Even mine apparently, according to you.
Apparently your loftier goals seem to have fallen short after the decades you put in…… just kidding, sure, why not, great goal.
“Regarding the book, we have held off on marketing until Spring for reasons you may or may not understand.” That’s rich; yeah with my Masters in Marketing, I can see it might be confusing why someone announces a product and then markets 6 months later…. And fyi: my interest is the issues; you are just a sidebar, but yes, you have an interesting bio.
You and I have more in common than you think: old houses, except I kept mine. Wives, ditto. Worked in silly second-string consulting firms, but you had the balls to open your own. Antiques — you sold em and I bought them. The difference is you leaned into politics and I into business. And you have a half generation on me but, as I have said, are born older than I in mind and attitude.
I am glad you have good reviews; too bad they don’t seem to put them online. And yes, more than willing to google you on amazon to check those sales and inventories. Hopefully you will break the top 70,000 any day now.
i wish trump could get a third term just to punish the democrats for all the lies, cheating, criminal behavior and lawfare.
The problem is that most Dem states are in better shape than Red GOP states. So if you got your wish and Trump gets everything he wants, you will suffer greatly. And you will suffer for longer. And so will your children, aging parents, and friends. As an Independent/Unaffiliated voter, I do not wish to see our country cut off its nose to spite its face. This would not be good policy.
Let’s see, statistically speaking they have less education, less money, more guns, and a higher per capita gun death rate. And they are very pissed off and blaming us. We have higher education attainment, more money, less guns and a lower death rate from guns. And we are getting pissed off and blaming them. And yes, when there’s a economic downturn, they get fired first; no unions….
Now Trump says he’s bringing them lower prices on milk and honey, but he just added 25% to the price of goods north or south of the border. And 10% to chinese goods. Because they own tictock…. Or because he is more afraid of them than Canada. Now, as you pay more, Trump tosses that extra to Treasury who gives it to the government they hate. That’s good because he’s spending over $500k extra for every deportation flight using military resources. Not to mention the cost for thousands of soldiers to patrol the border or arrest immigrants. It’s getting expensive and someone must pay.
How’s the price of eggs. Without canadian bacon, who cares? Having fun yet? And the clusterfuck is just starting!!
The same nice people that paid for Trumps Mexico wall will surely pay for the deportation flights. Not having fun yet.
Around day one. Musk told faa head to resign. He did. He was not replaced.
Trump out buyout packages to all Federal employees saying find higher productivity jobs in private sector.
A plane collides with a helicopter in DC.
Trump emails another notice to employees to take the buyout.
A small jet crashes in a neighborhood in Philli.
Trump finally puts annacting faa head in.
A plane catches fire in Houston. Another hits a tow cart in Chicago.
Cause-effect-high anxiety as the clusterfuck continues. Who fires the faa head without a replacement. Who tells them all to quit and expect top quality results? Team Mump does.
Planes are falling out of rhe sky, crashing and burning on the ground. On Trump’s watch. .
Who’ll stop the rain!!!
don’t you mean: reign?
Two years.
Help me with this one.
Trump revamps NAFTA renaming his accomplishment: the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). He states: “The USMCA is the largest, most significant, modern, and balanced trade agreement in history. All of our countries will benefit greatly.”
Biden does not change this.
Trump says: “STANDING UP FOR AMERICAN WORKERS: USMCA will deliver more jobs and better labor protections that benefit American workers, while fostering more growth for American businesses.”
“SUPPORTING AMERICAN FARMERS: USMCA includes tremendous breakthroughs for American agriculture.”
“DRIVING NEW GROWTH FOR THE AUTO INDUSTRY: USMCA will provide a massive boost to American manufacturers, particularly our vital auto industry.”
“MODERNIZING REGIONAL TRADE: USMCA will bring our trade relationship with Canada and Mexico into the 21st century.”
So, what is happening here; did he screw the pooch the first time and now needs a second change to fix his own mess? Or is it just too damned easy to pick on our neighbors, jump up and down screaming, bully them because we are bigger than they and we can, or something else?
Don’t you feel like he is gaslighting us? I mean he said “mission accomplished,” was that a lie? Or is this?
Next, he will redo the Abraham’s Accord, move all Palestinians to hell, claim peach in the Middle East and watch his son-in-outlaw raise hotels and condo’s on the beaches of GAZA.
Frank Danger … Be glad to help. The tariffs on Mexico have nothing to do with the past trade agreement. It is leverage to get concessions on immigration. That should be obvious since the tariff got postponed when Mexico agreed to send more troops to the border. It was reported as a win for Trump. You saw the same thing with the postponement of the Canada tariff. Hope that helps.
You miss the point: Trump revamped NAFTA, made those claims, and now says tariffs.
He bullied, then caved to Canada announcing ‘”brand new” Canadian actions that are primarily those announced during Biden.
Same for Mexico who, during Trump 1, put 15,000 troops on the border. Now they promise to add 10,000 more, wink, wink, nudge, nudge, like anyone will ever count. Like all those factories Trump announced in Trump 1 that never happened; who is going to check.
You see reports of a win, I have not seen but I have seen many headlined: “much ado about nothing.” and “Trump gets sandbagged.”
Remember, in the time of the Felon King, it does not have to be, it just has to sound like it is.
According to Mexico and Canada, most of those troops were already at the border. Larry’s answer is only part true. They pushed back with many tariffs toward the USA and THEN Trump blinked and rolled tariffs back for a month. It is spin to think he gave another month because they sent troops. That is a fair amount of spin. Trump is about to find out he’s getting a whopping loss if he doesn’t buy time and spin it somehow. This is what Trump does, and Larry does it too. Don’t get sucked in. Trump thrives in chaos and keeps citizens from seeing the other things he is doing that he does not want you to see.
Tom, As noted, Mexico supposedly put 15k there in 2019 for Trump; they committed putting 10K there now. So, maybe they are adding 10K, maybe they are rotating 10K, maybe they are bringing back 10K that had left. One thing for sure, Trump will never count a number that is lower than 10K no matter what they do. Canada is a complete grinfuck, the Trump concession was made during Biden.
Yes, chaos. Think of all those folks in forced resignation from government. Think of FBI agents working on 1/6 criminal investigations, having been assigned the job, no choice, no politics, soon to be fired or worse —- having their names spilled to the magarats from Team Mump. I love a roller coaster market of chaos, but it’s not good for the economy. We will see in April when we get the `1Q GDP numbers, inflation, and unemployment.
