Joe and Mika Not Showing Up for Work Together as Much

For a show built on the chemistry of its co‑hosts, “Morning Joe” has spent a surprising amount of time without Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski actually appearing together. Reports describe chronic absences, internal frustration, and a growing sense that the once flagship morning program may now be MS NOW’s weakest link.

According to multiple sources, Joe and Mika have been “chronically absent” from their own show. One analysis found that during a 49‑day stretch, the pair appeared together on only 18 episodes, and 12 shows airing without either host present. That means that on roughly two‑thirds of the broadcasts, viewers were greeted by a rotating cast of fill‑ins — Willie Geist, Jonathan Lemire, or Katty Kay. These frequent absences have become so routine that staffers reportedly turned it into a “parlor game” of guessing who would show up on any given morning.

Inside the network, the situation has been described as a “workplace meltdown”. RadarOnline and AOL report that producers were left “scrambling” when the hosts repeatedly failed to appear, creating chaos behind the scenes and frustration among staffers who were left to patch together a four‑hour program without warning. These internal tensions have only intensified since MSNBC’s rebrand to MS NOW– a transition that has brought new budget pressures and heightened scrutiny of on‑air talent.

And the friction isn’t limited to staffers. Reports also point to tensions between Joe/Mika, and Rachel Maddow, the network’s marquee – and highest paid — personality. While details are thin, the suggestion of inter-host friction adds another layer to the instability surrounding the morning show.

The couple drew unprecedented and harsh criticism from within the network for their Mar‑a‑Lago interview with President Trump — a move that reportedly irritated colleagues who felt the segment was too soft and too friendly toward a person the network has spent years demonizing. These editorial disagreements have contributed to the perception that “Morning Joe” is increasingly out of step with the rest of MS NOW’s programming philosophy.

Then there’s the money. Joe Scarborough reportedly earns around $8 million per year, while Mika Brzezinski’s salary is estimated in the $2–$3 million range.  (Those numbers are based on publicly available industry estimates, although other sources put the salaries closer to $10 million).

In an era when MS NOW is facing budget tightening, the couple’s high compensation — combined with their inconsistent attendance — has raised questions about whether they are becoming an unnecessary financial burden.  When a show’s ratings are steady, high salaries are tolerated. When ratings soften — and hosts stop showing up — the calculus changes.  Even Maddow is reported to have suffered a $10 million cut in her $40 million salary.

The on‑air dynamic between Joe and Mika has also fueled speculation about deeper personal or professional strain. Viewers have noticed frequent moments of on‑camera hostility — with Joe talking over Mika and rudely shutting down her comments.

In one explosive instance, Scarborough literally yelled into Mika’s face and threatened to do the show without her.  The outburst seen by millions was later attributed to differences over editorial policy.

Mika, for her part, does little to hide her irritation when Joe starts the brow beating.  Her facial expressions and body language often convey frustration and anger even when her words do not. These visible tensions have become a recurring topic among viewers and media critics.

Their increasing number of solo appearances has only intensified the speculation. Some insiders reportedly believe separating them may be a deliberate strategy by management — a way to keep the show stable while reducing the friction that comes from putting the pair together on set.

All of this raises a larger question.  Is “Morning Joe” still the reliable anchor of MS NOW’s morning lineup? Once a defining program for MSNBC, the show now feels like a relic of a previous era — one struggling to maintain relevance, consistency, and cohesion. 

With its hosts frequently absent, its internal tensions increasingly public, and its costs rising at a time when the network is tightening belts, “Morning Joe” may be the weakest link in the MS NOW chain.  The show’s future will likely depend on whether Joe and Mika can re‑establish the stability and chemistry that once made them a compelling morning duo. But for now, the story is not about what they’re saying on air — it’s about how often they are not there at all.
