Gov Kristi Noem’s Plans to Counter the Chinese Communist Party’s Threat to America

“They want to become the world’s dominating power. The only way that they do that is by eliminating the United States of America.”

Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota is vocalizing serious concerns about the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) growing influence in the United States, particularly through the strategic acquisition of American farmland. This issue, she believes, is not just an economic concern but a significant national security threat, highlighting the potential dangers of foreign adversaries owning land near critical U.S. defense infrastructure.

The Governor’s alarm is underscored by startling figures: over a ten-year period, Chinese purchases of American agricultural land have surged by an astonishing 5,300%. “They aggressively changed their tactics to start buying up our land, and they’re buying our land near our strategic Air Force bases, our national defense resources,” Noem stated in an interview. She further elaborated on the severity of the situation, asserting, “They want to become the world’s dominating power. The only way that they do that is by eliminating the United States of America.”

In response to these concerns, Governor Noem is advocating for federal legislation to address this encroachment. She is a staunch supporter of a bill proposed by Chairman Gallagher, which seeks to prevent China and other adversarial nations from purchasing U.S. farmland, especially near key national security locations. This bill would enhance the authority of the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS), allowing it to more effectively scrutinize and potentially block such land purchases.

Moreover, Governor Noem’s approach extends to the financial arena, where she endorses the PRC Accountability and Divestment Act of 2023, introduced by U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson. This act would enable states to divest taxpayer funds from companies linked to the CCP. Governor Noem emphasizes the importance of this measure, stating, “America needs to wake up and recognize that aggressive action needs to happen. We’ve been working to address it in our state. But Congress needs to take action.”

The Governor’s concerns also reflect her extensive experience in food policy, where she has observed China’s strategic movements. “I’ve watched them buy up our fertilizer companies, our chemical companies. They own our processing systems. Now they’re purchasing up our land,” Noem recounted, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the CCP’s approach to gaining leverage in the United States.

Governor Noem’s advocacy for a robust response to these threats, both at the state and federal levels, underscores the urgency of addressing these issues to safeguard U.S. national security.

Farmers are getting put out of business in this country between State, Fed, and local fees & regulations.
Only someone with deep pockets like the Chinese can afford to farm and lobby to reduce impact fees.

I am from the Government and I am here to help!

We need both parties to get together and develop a comprehensive ten year and twenty year plan to contain China from owning and influencing the USA. And part of that plan has to be a foreign policy component to 1) Demonstrate the benefits of democracy over communism, 2) limit their influence in our part of the hemisphere.

Why NOT help the FARMER . . . starting by getting rid of “red tape”?!?

      Get rid of democrats

If they did that: 1) You would miss Frank Stetson and yearn for his return; 2) You would see how stupidly and authoritatively the GOP behaves; 3) You would not have anyone else to blame! :>)

We would also be able to save our republic. The democrats are more likely to be dictators than republicans would

Good idea. What red tape are you referring to?

Dan seems to grab a PR flack piece from the governor of South Dakota and runs full steam without so much as a second source, an abject journalistic failure of incompetence. The gov says: “Chinese purchases of American agricultural land have surged by an astonishing 5,300%. They aggressively changed their tactics to start buying up our land, and they’re buying our land near our strategic Air Force bases, our national defense resources.” Might be true, wonder what the time period was and if you have 1 acre and buy 5,300 more —- hmmm. That’s a farm only two times the size of Comer’s.

First, her standing: she governs less people per mile than 45 other governors. Her state’s gdp for 2q23 grew, but at less than half the rate of the rest of the country and in the fourth quartile of bottom feeders. In terms of total gdp, they rate 47th out of 50. Walmart is their top employer in the state followed shortly thereafter by Ellsworth Air Base as in SD is dependent on the government for survival because they can’t support themselves. They do pull in $2B a year via tourism, that’s new money, not churn, and that’s a great thing for SD and the bikers. In education, they rate meh in the middle but are one of the lowest pays for teacher states in the Union so pretty good results for being tightwads on teacher’s pay. It’s a ho-hum place with low density as it’s claim to fame and a giant Airforce base to feed the family from the Federal trough. It’s pretty easy to see why land is available.

Now, China, and yes, they are in that strange place of partner and persecutor, business associate and ideological enemy. In sd, they own 8 firms and employ around 300 people. Oh the horror of it all. Compare that to Tom’s NC with 66 firms and 4,900 employees. Or Horist’s FL with 121 firms and 5,900 workers. FYI: fun fact – Tom’s firms turn twice the buck of Larry’s. Probably higher skill set in NC…. Actually, it’s probably driven by big business where China bought things like GE. In SD, the big one is a movie house. So the gov is worried about land but missed the part that the Chinese own the movie media outlets in her state showing nothing but Jackie Chan festivals. Uh oh, better get on that.

China owns about .12% of SD gdp. They are a nit to sd, that includes the farms and the movies. *https://macropolo.org/know-the-numbers/* It’s really cool, know your state! Tom is gonna love this one.

Even though China increased it’s land grab in the US a lot since 2019, politicians are fanning the hate flames because people are so gullible. The Chinese are 18th in the list of foreigners that own US land. Also, they must report to the government each purchase. Admittedly, the government fell down between 2015 to 2018 under Obama/Trump and did not pursue those who did not follow the law. Nonetheless they own over 380,000 acres like either Rhode Island or Bill Gates’ farms.

Point is that this is worthy of watching, looking into, but it’s not exactly a five-alarm fire. And there is little proof as these farms being a launching pad for spy or other warlike activities or that anything hinky is happening near our bases. I would be more worried about Canadians and our local militias…….

SD does not even seem to have standing, much less expertise in the topic. IT does make a great headline for personal PR for the gov though. Watch out for being tweaked into hating another boogeyman before he even boogies. We may need more legislation, control, and monitoring of ANY foreigner purchasing US assets, any asset, but targeting the Chinese, just for farmland, seems shortsighted as to the magnitude of a potential, not proven, but potential issues. I would be more worried about them owning GE but even there, they got the appliance part, not the high tech stuff.
