Biden immigration policies cause crisis in New York City
New York City is suffering an “immigration crisis” according to city officials. What is now happening in the Big Apple is the same crisis that has been impacting on southern border cities for years. The only difference is that those communities on the border are pure victims of immigrations policies – or more accurately, non-policies – of others. New York is suffering from their own politics and policies.
When it was only those poor mostly minority folks along the Texas border, Democrats in Washington and New York were contemptuous of their concerns. Open borders were acceptable – perhaps even desired – by the elitist Democrats. They fought against securing the border and building barricades. And they still are. They promoted efforts to defund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). They voted for an increasing array of benefits as humanitarian aid when they were really enticements to illegally cross the border. AND … they created sanctuaries wherever they governed to insulate illegal aliens against prosecution.
Now the proverbial roosters have come to roost in the Democrats’ own stronghold of New York City – and the City leaders are not happy. That is not entirely new. You will recall the reaction when just a couple dozen migrants landed in the progressive playground of Martha’s Vineyard. They welcomed them with open arms but booted them out of town in a matter of days. If we did not already have the political cliché of “not in my backyard (NIMBY)”, we would have had to coin it to describe the hypocrisy of the folks in Martha’s Vineyard.
You may also recall how former New York Mayor Bill de Blasio was so proud to have his community a sanctuary city. How he theoretically embraced the illegal aliens as legitimate migrants “yearning to be free.” Of course, that was when very few of the illegal border crossers were landing in the Big Apple. Nevertheless, New York is now living with the de Blasio legacy.
New York City is screaming foul. The flock of migrants coming over the border has metastasized throughout the country. Sheltering facilities are being overwhelmed. Migrants are sleeping – and toileting — on the streets of Manhattan. Crime is rising – including drug-related crimes. These crimes are going unprosecuted by “progressive” District Attorneys. The lines of migrants residing on the pavement are blocking access to small businesses.
City leaders are now embracing language that they criticized in the past. They are pushing back on Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas’ claim that the borders are not open. They are using the once forbidden word “crisis” to describe the impact of the Biden administration’s policies. New York Mayor Eric Adams has joined the chorus of those demanding that the border be secured. He is complaining about the lack of action by President Biden.
In response to Adam’s call for help from Washington (🡨 That means more money), the Biden administering has assigned a liaison – a person to whom they can complain. But a person who cannot do much more than listen.
Democrat City Council member Bob Holden goes even further than Adams. He called the liaison response a “kick in the head” – and accused Biden of essentially telling New York City to “drop dead.” (He was reprising 1975 New York Daily News headline “Ford to City: Drop Dead – when President Ford refused to bail out New York from near bankruptcy.)
One can sympathize with the people of New York City in their time of crisis – but not quite as much as we may sympathize with those folks along the southern border. The people of New York City voted for irresponsible feel-good policies of the progressive left. Now they are paying the price. It is about time.
So, there ‘tis.
It really does not matter were the border crossers are staying, New York, San Francisco, wherever.
Come election time a person living in the streets of New York will have Voted in Georgia, if that
is were his Vote is needed.
The Democrat’s in DC just want a Body, who or where they actually are makes no difference.
That is the Obomiden way.
Darren, you’re post does not make sense. If Democrats could use an illegal alien voter in NY to count as a legal vote in Georgia, why would they even need the voter? I mean if they could pull that one off, I’m sure they could just “cook the books” without needing a human, much less an illegal version.
BUSTED – delusional.
Now you are starting to understand.
Yes, we have a border crisis which now extends to NYC in the same manner as it extends to LA, San Fran and other West Coast cities, extending from our border States. Our crisis is not being solved by Joe Biden, the entire Congress, and a couple of Governors, one of which is in it for the political points. Congress makes the laws, the President implements, change adapt via EO, but Congress makes the laws.
The situation is a political football with both sides attempting to score points by submitting and rejecting immigration legislation leaving the President in charge EO-ing his way best he can; been that way for decades. Trump’s draconian quasi-legal inhumane methods and hallmark wall did not stop them; Biden’s legal more human approach has dramatically escalated the situation. Congress continues to do what they do best: nothing.
Hate to say it, but immigrants are like ants, once one finds food and shelter, they communicate with others who then follow. My Irish “ants” did that to the outskirts of Philadelphia to work the steel mills with their Irish brethren in the 1860’s, not exactly the traditional business of the Irish, but once established, we all followed creating Whiskey Lane, Cork Row and other Irish neighborhoods as the indigenous species labelled their new neighbors. My Slavic side came in the early 1900’s and followed their ant trail to the area surrounding Scranton where their business of mining could be found, but also many from Slovakia already there. I am sure this “process” still holds true today and has a lot to do with NYC’s popularity. Jamie Farr has a funny piece about his family, Lebanese, winding up in Toledo Ohio this way.
We are a nation created by open borders. We had little or no immigration restrictions until 1917. About three quarters of my ancestors crossed open borders to come to America, the last quarter came legally through restricted borders in the 1940’s.
SPOILER ALERT: We do not have open borders today, Horist is wrong, we have not had open borders in over a century. We have close to 20,000 border agents, over double that of 2001. We spend over 30% more on border security under Biden than Trump. It’s not for lack of resources that illegals keep crossing. It’s for lack of legislation due to lack of Congressional action to create the laws that will better seal off the border, to limit the desire to cross, and to limit the languishing in limbo while waiting for the asylum process to complete.
Our immigration issues and border crisis have been with us for decades; they are not Biden’s alone. Congress has done little except use the issue to gain political points. Trump has success by using covid and a emergency health law workaround, Title 42, to gain some traction. Republicans claim it’s Biden’s open border policies but mostly can’t point to them nor is there an open border policy. At most, it’s a de facto open border policy, but it is not even that. Trump’s policies did not stop illegal border crossings, the pandemic did. His wall is still there and still not working except as a soundbite. An open border would not have any need for a gate. We have gates at every border. Our borders are not, and never have been open for over a century. BUSTED.
Republicans claim it’s sanctuary cities like NYC is welcoming them. Really — they feel welcome today in NYC? Sanctuary cities are formed when locales tell the Federal Government that they will not use taxpayer dollars to do the Federal Government’s work to find, detain, and deport illegals. That’s the definition. Sounds almost conservative, State Right’s and all that. I hate Abbot’s and DeSanctimonious’ silent busing to blue cities, but the NYC outcome is shedding an important new light on a very old situation and Horist’s “roosters to roost” may actually be a good thing to highlight the hell we all are creating, and Congress is not fixing. Three reasons to come: to join family, to get a job, and to escape violence. We can end the job seeking part if we end the ability for illegals to get a job. We have tools for that, but do not deploy them nationally. Only nine states mandate it for all jobs, 25 have voluntary programs (yeah, that works). Congress could end illegals getting a job TODAY. Biden would have to do their legislative bidding. For asylum, Trump forced people to stay in Mexico to be preyed upon, raped, robbed, and killed. Biden is opening centers in asylum-hot countries: it is not working. We need to process rapidly for either “in or out” status, and perhaps put a cap on it. Congress needs to help.
And then there’s the issue of folks who are illegal yet virtual citizens after living and working here for over a decade. Some say deport and start over, some say let’s integrate, but no one does anything much about it.
Fact is, Republicans politicize immigration to score political points using questionable facts, generalizations, urban legends, and myths to create FUD. Democrats politicize immigration to score political points by painting Trump’s inhumanity across the entire Republican field. Even if true, the crazy rhetoric probably helped, just did not fix and had some serious unintended outcomes of the cruel variety. And it does nothing to fix the situation. We need a holistic bipartisan approach, FAST, that covers the entire topic from family to work visas to asylum to illegals, legislatively, to fix this broken system.
Frank Stetson … You say we do not have open borders. LMAO. Then why are so many folks — including the mayor of New York City — calling on Biden to secure the border? You explanation of Sanctuary Cities is just wrong. I will think of it as ignorance because the alternative is fibbing. It is not just to protect migrants from FEDERAL law enforcement, as you suggest. It also protects them from local enforcements. And why do you oppose local law enforcement working WITH the feds to enforce the laws against criminal behavior?
You note that the leaders in NYC are talking against Sanctuary Cities without conceding that it has been Democrat city and country officials — and even state officials — who have been creating these “sanctuaries” for decades. They have contributed to the problem. Now that it is a crisis for NYC, or course Mayor Adams is looking at ending his city’s nutty policy. Just proves the Republicans were correct all along.
Yes, the borders are not open…lol. We just have millions of people crossing them illegally every year. The claim that we do not have open borders is as ludicrous as when former Senate Leader Harry Reed claimed that paying federal income taxes was voluntary. There are just some lies that no matter how big they are … or how often you tell them … will not pass the smell test with the folks back home. Your “no open borders” bs is one of them
As I noted, Horist, like most Republicans, politicizes immigration to score political points using questionable facts, generalizations, urban legends, and myths to create FUD. Democrats politicize immigration to score political points by painting Trump’s inhumanity across the entire Republican field. Even if Democrats are right, Trumps crazy rhetoric probably helped, just did not fix the problem long-term, eroded our prestige across the globe, and had some serious unintended outcomes of the cruel variety. And it does nothing to fix the situation. We need a holistic bipartisan approach, FAST, from Congress, that covers the entire topic from family to work visas to asylum to illegals, legislatively, to fix this broken system.
Horist regales us with the Democrat’s problems in immigration. Some examples of Republican FUD, direct from the Horist’s mouth, would be:
“Open borders were acceptable – perhaps even desired – by the elitist Democrats.” There are NO open borders in America, have not been open since 1917. This is a soundbite banner myth by the Right.
“They fought against securing the border and building barricades. And they still are.” Who exactly is fighting against securing the border? Wall deniers, as far as I can tell, desire a secure border, just not by stupid, ineffective means. And, if walls work, then why is the Trump wall, all those miles he boasts about, not doing anything good?
“They promoted efforts to defund Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).” Reformation is not destruction. And this is not the purview of “elitist Democrats,” more like Democratic Socialists like AOC, Bernie, and even Warren. But, of course, let’s paint all Democrats as “elitest.”
“They voted for an increasing array of benefits as humanitarian aid when they were really enticements to illegally cross the border.” Who they and what array did they GET? Should be obvious since “increasing” and an “array.” Generalization is a propagandist’s tool. Specifics are not.
“AND … they created sanctuaries wherever they governed to insulate illegal aliens against prosecution.” Sanctuaries? Like they are safe for prosecution? No, they are just safe from prosecution by the city and state; still totally fair game to the Feds. It’s that the locales are not going to pay to do the Fed’s work on command by the Fed. At least not without pay…..
Biden and Trump comparison:
Trump invoked title 42 because the pandemic allowed him to, by previous law. This allows us to turn viable asylum seekers away, amongst others. It also created a revolving door of illegal border crossings since there was zero added penalty for subsequent attempts. This was March of 2020 — the last year of his term so the “revolving door” repeat offenders part hits in 2021 under Biden. Yet another Trump trap left for his successor. Like Afghanistan. Like the economy.
Biden kept Title 42, he did not turn the Trump policy over, until the law forced him to, due to end of pandemic, in MAY OF 2023.
Until May of 2023, both these gents did the same thing here in regards to Title 42 and border security.
NOW, Biden has opened regional processing centers in country which have not worked. But he tried. NOW, people who cross illegally are deported, barred from re-entering a minimum of five years without jailtime, and be “presumed ineligible for asylum”, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Under Title 42, there were no such consequences for re-entry. Now they face five years in prison.
Trump implemented the Migrant Protection Protocols in 2019 forcing asylum seekers to stay in Mexico for their US immigration hearings. Tens of thousands of vulnerable people were stranded in Mexico for months at a time, attacked by criminal gangs, kidnapped, raped, etc.
Biden said “fuck that,” Trump judge said “fuck you,” and in June of 22, the Trump Supreme Court agreed…wait for it….with Biden and this inhuman, illegal, process ended. By the Trump SCOTUS.
Trump separated about 3,900 kids from parents from 20-17 to 2021. Many parents were deported while kids remained. This cruel and unusual punishment policy probably had the biggest chilling effect on asylum attempts.
Biden ended this; about 1,000 kids are not yet reunited as of 2023. Trump should rot in hell for this one: Sessions too. This is not American ideology at work. This is not who we are. It has taken over four years to reunite some of these families, and they are the lucky ones.
At the end of 2021, Biden reduced ICE detention requirements on FAMILIES.
Biden spends more on border security than Trump: the cost for the border increased every year under Trump (indicating he still needed more) and continues to increase every year under Biden. IT AIN”T THE MONEY, it’s the lack of legislation from Congress to end the hiring of illegals, to make asylum more cost effective, etc. that mandates that the problem will continue, more will enter, and more money will be needed.
I do not claim that I have all the issues, and certainly not all the answers. It’s a sampling. What I do know is we need to fix the root causes: a big one is hiring illegals. If we end the reason many come, many less will come. Congress, both sides of the aisle. And do not send Kamala to the border alone :>)
