Are Democrats Bribing Voters with Tax Money?
Democrats using public funds for bribing voters is not new. Oh … I am not referring to handing a voter a ten-dollar bill outside the polling place – although that has been an iconic characteristic of the urban Democrat political machines for generations. Sometimes it was a pint of booze to carry the skid row precinct.
Today it is much more sophisticated – and much more successful, unfortunately. I am referring to the redistribution of taxpayer wealth to constituent voting blocks. Vote for the Democratic Party, and when they are in power they will send you money. That scheme has soared to outer space in the advent of current Democrat control of Washington – specifically the multiple trillion-dollar spending bills passed and proposed by the three supercilious architects of outrageous spending – President Biden, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
On the surface, it may look like a whole bunch of well-meaning humanitarian programs. But basically, the tradeoff is money for votes. These funds are targeted for groups, organizations and individuals as a means of maintaining voting loyalty or recruiting more supplicants.
The concept of public funds for votes is a longstanding practice.
But it got institutionalized during the Great Depression with the Black community being the initial target. Prior to the Depression, Blacks voted overwhelming for the Republican Party. And why not? The GOP – starting with President Lincoln – ended slavery and spent the next 100 years fighting for the freedom and constitutional rights of Black Americans against the unrelenting opposition of the Democratic Party.
In the early 1930s, Black voters crossed over to elect President Franklin Roosevelt and Democrat candidates for Congress, but they did not change party allegiance. In fact, most Black voters registered as Republicans until the late 1940s.
Ever fearful of losing the Black vote – and that was happening – Democrats came up with a plan.
It was the genius of a one-time Republican Chicago alderman – turned Democrat — named William Dawson. In return for his switching sides, he was rewarded with a congressional seat and made the boss of the Windy City’s segregated and impoverished Black population. He ruled over what they called the “sub-machine.”
Dawson concocted a scheme to keep Black voters loyal to the Democratic Party – even as they remained segregated and oppressed by the bosses in City Hall. His idea was to keep Black voters poor, confined and dependent on government welfare programs to maintain a fixed level of bare financial subsistence. Not upward mobility – just subsistence within the confined and controllable urban ghettos communities.
Dawson’s scheme was so enticing and successful, that FDR made him the vice chairman of the National Democratic Party – commissioned to spread his concept wherever Democrat political machines prevailed. And he did.
In short, what Dawson did was change the definition of civil rights for Blacks.
They would surrender their constitutional rights to a quality education, jobs, upward mobility, integration in the greater society, safe streets, quality housing, equal justice etc. for the “new civil rights” of minimal financial security based on demographic confinement (segregation) and government (taxpayer) provided generational welfare dependency.
The concept of holding voters with taxpayer money is the reason that so much of the so-called modern civil rights legislation has to do with pumping money into the favored constituencies – a pittance of the money for the Black public, but handsome financial rewards for Black leaders supporting the concept. It is the reason true civil rights leaders – fighting for freedom, justice, equality and constitutional rights – such as Martin Luther King are replaced with characters like media personality Al Sharpton – who has made millions of dollars peddling economic dependency on government.
Weeeell … the concept worked so well with the generationally impoverished Black community that the Democratic Party expanded it to every constituency they could conceivably bribe. And it is not just money for minorities or other special class citizens. No no no. The money is to buy votes and control the political message – the propaganda narratives. It is money for the unions, the universities, public radio and television and for favored corporations.
The scheme works because of our human nature and the desire to have more and more — and even better if we do not have to earn it. Of course, we ultimately pay the price in terms of taxes. But Democrats work on the belief that we the people are both greedy and stupid – and maybe we are.
That is what has given the Democratic Party the appellation as the “tax and spend” Party.
Their willingness to tax today’s Americans – and borrow from the future earnings of the yet unborn Americans – appears to have no limit. Biden promises to follow up with his $1.9 trillion misnamed Covid-19 Relief Bill with a $3 trillion misnamed Infrastructure Bill.
They sent out billions of dollars to Americans at $1400 a pop. But less then 20 percent of the recipients were in existential need of the money. I can think of many friends and family members who will now have gotten $3400 as a gift (bribe) from Uncle Sam who were not in any way in desperate need – me included. Had I not gotten the money, my life would not have changed in any significant way.
This is how the Democratic Party works. Millions of Americans get money they do not need.
Airlines get billions of dollars. Small businesses get billions without establishing necessity. More money for failing schools despite the fact that all that past money did no good. Money to bail out Democrat-run cities that went broke providing cushy pensions for Democrat bureaucrats. Make work federal projects for unions only. Grants to colleges and universities. Earmarked money for thousands of community projects.
The so-called Covid-19 Relief Bill alone had money for refugee assistance … student loan bailout … Endowment for the Arts … Endowment for the Humanities … local museums and libraries … public and Indian housing … House of Representatives staff … unspecified Senate expenses … post office bailout … public radio and television … Washington establishment’s favorite entertainment venue – the Kennedy Center for the Preforming Arts … Peace Corps … Airline “recycle and save program” … Howard University … Office of the Inspector General … Amtrak … etc. etc. etc.
When you saw the short list of real benefits from the Covid-19 Relief Bill on your television screen, you were not likely to have seen any of the aforementioned expenditures. The compliant new media merely lists the 10 percent of the money that was actually going to good use – the portion Republicans would have supported had it not been for the excessive and obscene expenditures on pet political projects.
Approximately 90 percent of the $1.9 trillion in the Covid-19 Relief Bill went for projects and constituencies that were unrelated to the Pandemic or its direct effects.
It was just another cover to spread billions for patisan political advantage. The fact that almost half the expenditures will have to be covered by borrowing from the work and wealth of future generations is immaterial to Democrats. Permanent empowerment is all that matters to those on the left.
Benjamin Franklin wisely noted that “When the people find that they can vote themselves money that will herald the end of the republic.”
He is probably correct. If we, as a nation, fall into the Democratic Party trap of money for votes, we will have left a failed nation to our children and grandchildren. Not a very noble legacy for a generation that is often acclaimed as the “greatest.”
So, there ‘tis.
Yes!!
Preaching to the choir, Larry. I’ve been saying the same for years, but in union-heavy Southeastern Michigan, few listened. A little better along the Southeast coast, but still lots of angry pushback.
I noticed Republican voters are getting and taking the money too. Is every voter that easy to sway? You are right in one aspect, I didn’t need the money, so gave it to a food bank. Republicans could have help fix that in Congress, but they decided to say NO NO NO.
What did you do with the money? You certainly didn’t return it to the Treasury.
We’re still awaiting our second one, and then will wait for the latest one. The only reason we’ll accept them now is because in a very short time, we’ll be giving it back in the form of tax increases. But, you don’t want recognize that do you, Gerry?
Of course, Democrats are bribing citizens with our tax money. Before the 2020 elections, Biden put forth a bribe of $1400 (or perhaps $2000, depending on interpretation) per person for votes for Democrats.
Not like you didn’t see it coming, Larry. But your persistent “damning by faint praise” of one Donald Trump sure as Hell didn’t help put anybody decent into the presidency – nor your soft-peddled and frankly inaccurate reporting of the stolen votes crisis. But Hey, Donald Trump isn’t there anymore! Consequences be damned…
It can certainly be said that you didn’t see it coming, Mr. Larry. There was a president – a real one – just recently that did everything he could to stop the tidal wave of Socialism implicitly or explicitly supported by the democrat morons and do-nothing republi-cants. Bluntly said, your persistent policy of “damning by faint praise” of Trump, and your soft-peddled reporting of the stolen votes crisis did absolutely nothing to stem the tide. You all get what you deserve; unfortunately I’m getting what you deserve as well, not for lack of trying to fight it.
