Biden delivers his own political obituary at the convention
President Biden is not only a lame duck President. He is a dead duck President.
He was given an opportunity to present his own political obituary at the Democratic National Convention. He reflected on his loooong political career as a Washington establishment insider. His retrospective is appropriate at this time since Biden has no more accomplishments to be achieved. His speech was divided between hyperbolic bragging – with a good measure of malarky – and a few nasty barbs at President Trump and the Republican Party.
Biden is not likely to be an activist past President like Presidents Obama and Carter. Biden has neither the political capital, the box office appeal nor the physical and mental vitality to be an activist former President. He is more likely to be like Carter of recent years.
That was evident in Biden’s convention speech. Biden was provided a speaking part at the least viewed time on the least viewed day – post-prime time on the first day of the convention. That is the day when the lesser luminaries are scheduled – folks like Representatives Ocasio-Cortez, Jasmine Crockett, Congressman Jamie Raskin and former First Lady Hillary Clinton. (No … Hillary is no longer a major or influential luminary in the Democratic Party. She is another blast from the past to whom the current Democrat leadership pays scant attention.)
Biden spoke forcefully for 55 minutes – with only an occasional glimpse of his declining mental acuity. At one point, he seemed to go blank in the middle of a sentence. Interestingly, the audience came to his rescue by cheering and chanting — in a seeming effort to provide Biden some time to recover. Even in reading from the teleprompter, he was intensely focused on the script – obviously reading. He apparently lost his skill at making it appear off the cuff.
For the most part, however, Biden looked and sounded good. But much of that was due to having a scripted speech to read. Older folks with mental acuity issues are often able to read flawlessly. It is just that they cannot remember or connect thoughts extemporaneously. We have seen that in the past when comparing Biden’s teleprompter State of the Union Speech and his later debate performance.
When claiming their accomplishments, typical politicians create narratives based on spin, exaggeration and outright lies. Biden is a typical politician in that regard. He took credit for things he did not do. He took credit for things that did not work out as well as he claimed. He said a lot of things that were just … malarky. And of course, he omitted his failures (Afghanistan, the border, Israel ceasefire, deterring the Russian invasion, curbing inflation).
Once Biden leaves the Oval Office, he will shuffle off into eventual political oblivion. No … he is not the greatest President of modern times – or any time. Not by a long shot. Those claims are nothing more than hometown political flattery.
It has been a long run – a very, very long run. Biden will now get the peaceful retirement he has earned – much like Reagan in the final years of his life.
So, there ‘tis.
Wow, just wow.
This guy has served for how many years in good faith and with good thoughts, good ideas, good deeds and great accomplishments for the people of this country and beyond.
How dare you cast dispersion at this time.
Biden’s departure will always resonate with Washington’s, one of the few American Presidents really hard to toss a stone at, not bad company even if the comparison seems tenuous to some, dubious to others. Your guy will resonate with mug shot pandeingr to the Black folk. As far as I can tell, Biden has an admirable character. Your guy is liable for digital rape. Biden steal little. Your guy makes money from you fools for a mug-shot t-shirt, golden sneakers, and worse merch for the mob.
You pick on him for speech affects. You still harp on his age. If he hiccups, you claim dementia. Your guy is the oldest candidate ever. And he was crazy when young. He lied his entire life. Biden has spun, at worst. Your guy went bankrupt umpteen times. Biden has been solvent. Your guy has a silver spoon. Biden does not. Biden married an American. Your guy’s wife is raised as a communist.
I understand your need to criticize all things Democratic, but really —– the dog is down, the dog is leaving, the dog is done for and yet, you continue venting your frustrations on this man calling him a dead duck, bragging, malarky, he can only speak on script, and many other jabs. What’s the point? The glass house is broken, what is the value of throwing more stones?
You favor a felon, a rapist, a sexual abuser, a cheat, and more. Biden is a good man, tried hard, served his country for his entire life while you just made a buck in the same arena and served your country —- not. As did I. But I at least made the wheels of industry turn, provided product to the people. You provided little, mostly muck. There is only personal profit in this story; wrong time, wrong place, wrong to write in the first place.
Let it go.
Frank Stetson … as usual you complain about the commentary and divert to Trump. This commentary is about Biden … period. As Truman noted … if you cannot stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Biden is a politician and President He is not above or beyond criticism. He is not (yet) confined to a nursing home staring at the wall. Although you seem to think he is in such bad shape that he deserves only deference and pity — a beaten dog as you describe him. I think that he might be more offended by your description of him more than my criticism. Your sanctimonious defense of Biden is not relevant — and your whataboutism is just typical of you.
WTG Larry, I am with you on this. Biden and his PEOPLE cover all his crimes, sexual misconducts (Tara Reade) who had to flee the country, check with Dr. Jill’s ex-husband, abuse of the Justice system just to name a few. Someone needs to open his closet and all the skeletons will come falling out.
But its ok to divert to Reagan?
I think its relevant to compare your favoritism to a felon whose is OK because you love those policies. his covid response is a policy…..
I favor ACs view over horists. And I think it inappropriate to be bashin on him at this time, in this way. Feel free to attack the policies, but leave Joe the person be. Five months and he will be out of our lives forevermore. You can believe me when I note I will not revisit Trump once he vacates the arena. My obsession is just not that bad.
As eulogies go, in the context you imagine, It’s rare when one gives their own. Biden did an admirable job with his speech. He has a long successful period in our country’s history invested in political service to our country. He deserves the honor given him at the DNC Convention.
Because he is a Democrat, small Republican persons will begrudge President Biden his due for his total life service. Does Horist count himself among the small in personality who make all thinking Party related.
Republicans think they alone are the true patriots in our nation. What is patriotism? Patriots come in different packaging. But, true patriots stand and give respect and honor when Biden or other upstanding servant politicians who go into retirement
What will the legacy any of us leave look like?
Not nearly as great as Biden’s own, will the majority leave
