Romanian Hacker Claims Accessing Clinton Server was 'Easy'
As I wrote last month, the US government has extradited a famous Romanian hacker in an effort to prove without a doubt that Hillary’s insecure homebrew server was hacked by a third party.
The hacker, who goes by the name “Guccifer,” has been involved in numerous high-level security breaches in the past. This time, he stands accused of hacking into Sidney Blumenthal’s email account during Hillary’s time as Secretary of State.
The 44-year-old hacker claims that he hacked into Hilary’s account in 2013. “For me it was easy,” he said. “For me, for everybody.” Guccifer will soon stand trial in Alexandria, Virginia for his cybercrimes, but is aiding the FBI in hopes of reducing his sentence.
This week, Fox News was permitted a few phone calls with the hacker. When asked how many times he accessed Hillary’s server, Guccifer replied, “…like twice. I was not paying attention. For me it was not like the Hillary Clinton server. It was like an email server she and others were using with political voting stuff.”
Guccifer thought the emails dry and boring, finding nothing embarrassing or salacious enough to share.
Despite the fact that the FBI has so far been unable to disprove or confirm Guccifer’s claims, Hillary continues to deny all accusations, saying it is “unfathomable” that Guccifer could have gained access to her account.
“Unfortunately in this community a lot of people make up stories and it’s hard to know what’s really true until you get into the forensics information and get hard facts,” says Bob Gourley, a former chief technology officer for the Defense Intelligence Agency. Gourley believes that Guccifer’s claims are plausible.
“The Blumenthal account gave [Guccifer] a road map to get to the Clinton server…You get a foothold in one system. You get intelligence from that system, and then you start to move,” adds cybersecurity expert Morgan Wright.
Guccifer admits he had to guess the answers to security questions in order to gain access to Blumenthal’s account. He then used that account as a stepping stone to access Hillary’s: “For example, when Sidney Blumenthal got an email, I checked the email pattern from Hillary Clinton, from Colin Powell, from anyone else to find out the originating IP…When they send a letter, the email header is the originating IP usually.”
He then used an “IP scanner” along with other web programs to discover which ports were open and whether the server was “alive.” As Guccifer progressed, he found that he wasn’t alone. “As far as I remember, yes, there were…up to 10, like IPs from other parts of the world.”
Guccifer isn’t a top-notch programmer. He doesn’t have support from a foreign intelligence service. My point here is that if this nut considers it “easy” to break in to Hillary’s private server, it’s all but certain that the Chinese, Russians, and others were reading her emails too.
The former Secretary of State’s secret server held more than 2,000 emails considered “classified” and an additional 22 deemed “TOP SECRET.” If Guccifer is convicted for hacking into Hillary’s email account, we will have proof that she was hacked by a third party – which could mean Hillary is indicted as well.
Editor’s note: This guy is pretty close to the lowest rung of hackers.
If ya'll say so, E.D., then it must be so. MSNBC vs PBP challenge and compare. Scandals, they pop up…
Whoops, I meant Robert.
I was referring to Roger being mentally unhinged. He's the one that was ranting. Hell, I support Trump. I don't…
