Ohio GOP Senator’s Bill Calls for Severe Consequences for Harming Cops

Saying “enough is enough,” Ohio’s freshman GOP Senator Bernie Moreno has introduced legislation that would increase the criminal penalties for harming a police officer after a sheriff’s deputy was killed in the line of duty in Cincinnati, Ohio, earlier this month.
Moreno’s Larry Henderson Act would update existing law, stating that anyone who forcibly assaults, resists, opposes, impedes, intimidates, or interferes with any law enforcement officer engaged in official duties would be required to face one to eight years in prison, depending on the severity.
The Senator’s bill would up that mandatory minimum to 20 years.
The bill also “establishes federal jurisdiction over these crimes as exclusive and preemptive, superseding state or local prosecution for federal officers.”
“Enough is enough,” Moreno told Fox News in a statement.
“Anyone who assaults one of our men or women in blue needs to face severe consequences, period. Deputy Larry Henderson should be alive today, and that’s why I’m introducing legislation – in his honor – to protect our law enforcement officers.”
Moreno’s bill is named after Hamilton County, Ohio, Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Henderson, who was killed when he was struck by a car while directing traffic near the University of Cincinnati during a graduation ceremony.
Authorities have charged Rodney Hinton with aggravated murder and say he intentionally struck Henderson shortly after Hinton’s 18-year-old son was shot and killed by officers after allegedly fleeing in a stolen car while armed, according to prosecutors.
Ohio Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) President Jay McDonald said in a statement that Ryan’s father, Rodney Hinton Jr., “intentionally murdered a retired deputy who was working special duty at a graduation just because he was a police officer.”
Henderson was a 33-year officer with the HCSO and had served in multiple specialized units since 1991, including the dive team, HCPA SWAT, FBI Task Force Officer, and the HCSO Bomb Unit.
“In Deputy Henderson’s early tenure as a Sheriff’s Deputy, I recognized his talent for teaching and presentation,” Hamilton County Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey said in a statement after Henderson’s death.
“Larry began his journey as a Sheriff’s Office trainer early in his career. He developed an expertise and became an excellent trainer. Subsequently, he trained divisions of the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office that included hundreds of deputy sheriffs. His ability to relate to and touch officers’ lives was extraordinary. We will continue to honor Larry’s life of service.”
Prosecute the democrats who call for defunding the police and refuse to put the killers in jail permanently.
Jim, do you really understanding what “defunding the police” actually means? Because it does not usually mean less police. It often means restructuring reorganizing police so they can focus on crime and not social work. I’m a Democrat and I have never called for defunding the police. Quite the opposite, I would like to see more social work funding and resources added to police. I think focusing solely on crime gets you one jaded workforce over time. As far as putting all killers in jail permanently, that’s a very harsh stance leaving no room for crimes of passion, manslaughter, or even potentially self-defense. Nonetheless, none of this has a wit to do with the issue being discussed. It is a red herring.
For the issue at hand, IMO, the Federal Government probably should not tell States how to criminalize crimes against police even if you think this is the right thing. Doing the right thing the wrong way usually does not turn out well. The Federal Government is in its rights to decide how to criminalize crimes against Federal Police, a model that States can be free to emulate. State’s Rights, after all.
Not that it’s relevant, and perhaps as off-topic as the Wampler, but it also seems disingenuous coming from the party that pardons over 1,000 criminals, a large number convicted of crimes against Capital Police, for crimes against our Capitol Building, our representatives in Congress, Capitol Police, and many other police from other jurisdictions for 1/6/2021.
Dunger you know that the battle cry was completely doing away with police especially in blue cities and states. You libturds like to spin lies. And commiecrat governors would not give them the support they needed to enforce the laws. And during those times gun sales reached high levels in blue states where these idiots were trying to defund the police. So that proves that most rank and file democrats approve of gun ownership. It’s your career politician who pushes to disarm the people. But that’s only part of the deal. Activists in the legal community won’t even hold the criminals accountable. The problem is somewhat smaller since people are starting to get their heads out of their asses and vote out the George Soros prosecutors. But there’s still plenty more room to make things right. So don’t try to tell us anything about there not being a coup against law enforcement.
Meth: I spell my name: danger. And I am a liberal. Your fascination with excrement notwithstanding. I realize it’s your parent’s fault, but please try growing up. As usual, long on spew, short on facts. Prove it or STFU.
The story is about the Federal Government enacting National Law to increase punishments for crimes affecting State and Local police. Not defunding. But since you are so upset over something that does not even exist, let me add some facts.
First and foremost, as I said, you read, but did not comprehend: “I’m a Democrat and I have never called for defunding the police. Quite the opposite, I would like to see more social work funding and resources added to police. I think focusing solely on crime gets you one jaded workforce over time.”
I think if you follow the defund-the-police movement, first you will find it is dead. Second, where it was tried as an experiment, most police organizations grew in size in terms of “feet on the street”, and did not shrink. Other places where organizations were restricted, downsized, and perhaps even lost some officers, most of them were rescinded as failed experiments and budgets are bigger today than ever. Your knickers seem knotted over a failed experiment.
From WIKI: “In the United States, “defund the police” is a slogan advocating for reallocating funds from police departments to non-policing forms of public safety and community support initiatives, such as social services, youth programs, housing, education, healthcare, and other community resources. The goals of those using the slogan vary; some support modest budget reductions, while others advocate for full divestment as part of a broader effort to abolish contemporary policing systems.” Note that full divestment does not necessarily mean less police.
More: “Black Lives Matter (BLM), the Movement for Black Lives, and other activists have used the phrase to advocate for reallocating police budgets and delegating certain responsibilities to alternative organizations.”
“A 2024 study found no evidence of significant police defunding in major U.S. cities following the George Floyd protests, while cities with higher Republican vote shares often increased police budgets. According to The New York Times, the movement has failed to achieve substantial policy change, partly due to a lack of clear goals. The slogan itself was deemed unpopular and used to portray activists as lenient on crime.”
As to your “commiecrat governors” doing something, you show no proof, plus WTF do you even mean? Meth kicking in? And the best: “And during those times gun sales reached high levels in blue states where these idiots were trying to defund the police. So that proves that most rank-and-file democrats approve of gun ownership.” Same thing happened during the Obama election, the Clinton election yada, yada. Pretty sure I can show you my profits from buying gunnie stocks around then. Once after going into a Cabella’s and seeing the lines before Obama’s second term.
Correlation is not causation and you don’t have even the evidence for correlation. Just hot air.
“Activists in the legal community won’t even hold the criminals accountable.” Uh, proof? Mine is the Republican pardon for all 1/6/2021 convicts. Fourteen of them released after convictions for seditious conspiracy as in the prosecution proved they planned in advance to disrupt Congress by any means. They had an arms stash that would equip a small army. Over 400 were released after convictions for violence to police. Rioters used bats, flags, chemical sprays, poles and stolen police shields and batons to beat officers. Several rioters were convicted of charges for carrying loaded firearms in the melee. Most had pleaded guilty allocating their offenses in person, in public. You let them off the hook.
Your law-and-order party, your people, said: “if you committed violence on that day, obviously you shouldn’t be pardoned,” said VP JD. Obviously. Pam Bondi, Attorney General, said, “I condemn any violence on a law enforcement officer in this country” but obviously it was a small “i.”
Here’s what you support:
David Dempsey was convicted of repeatedly assaulting police officers with pepper spray, a metal crutch and wooden and metal poles. “For over one hour, defendant David Dempsey viciously assaulted and injured police officers,”
Julian Khater pepper sprayed Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick in the face. Later, Sicknick collapsed and was rushed to
the hospital where he died. He said he did it.
Christian Manley assaulted police with two cans of bear spray, and then threw the empty canister at them as well as a metal rod. He said he did it.
Patrick McCaughey used a police riot shield to “crush” DC Police Officer Daniel Hodges in a metal doorframe, leaving Hodges trapped, bleeding and crying for help from his fellow officers. He said he did that.
Ryan Nichols admitted in court that he pepper sprayed multiple officers while urging rioters through a bullhorn to storm the building. He screamed: “This is not a peaceful protest, if you have a weapon, you need to get your weapon!” Later, Nichols recorded a video calling for a second American Revolution stating: “if you want to know where Ryan Nichols stands, Ryan Nichols stands for violence.”
Christopher Quaglin was convicted at trial of viciously assaulting police officers for hours.
Daniel Rodriguez pleaded guilty to using a stun gun. He plunged it multiple times into Michael Fanone’s neck.
Peter Schwartz stole pepper spray from police officers, then distributed to rioters and spraying law enforcement. He said on tape: “What happened yesterday was the opening of a war. I was there and whether people will acknowledge it or not we are now at war.” Of course, he pled guilty.
Dunger you know that many liberals wanted the police to be dismantled. You idiots think that everyone is gullible just because you idiots believe everything and know nothing. BLM is made up of communists assholes who wants to destroy law and order and get away with everything. If they don’t want their black asses shot stop trying to harm the police. By the way, Biden has been diagnosed with a form of aggressive prostate cancer. My condolences. And I mean that. Even though he was too stupid to be president. Now we have a president who is a man from the ground up.
Wankler, I spell my name: danger. Yes, many liberals wanted to divest the police of social work and other activities not germane to stopping crime by catching criminals. Less so for wanting to fire police feet-on-the-street as the WIKI article notes. You have proven nothing else except your foul mouth and weak name-calling debating “style.”
BLM is not made up of communists, you have not shown evidence of that. BLM has not stated purpose to destroy law and order, nor “get away with everything,” much less your stupid statement that they are “trying to harm the police.”
As to your joy in “Now we have a president who is a man from the ground up,” oh my he said in a Mr. Sulu affect. How gay is that. Come on, tell us, do you have his picture on the wall? Mug shot or Superman version? I am betting you went for the skin tights. Oh my.
