Trump Crushes Massie: Ed Gallrein Wins Most Expensive House Primary in U.S. History

GALLREIN 54.5% | MASSIE 45.5%

Donald Trump claimed another political scalp Tuesday night as Trump-endorsed Ed Gallrein defeated longtime Republican Congressman Thomas Massie in Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District primary, ending one of the most bitter and expensive Republican feuds of the 2026 election cycle. The race became the most expensive House primary in American history, with more than $32 million spent as Trump and his political allies poured resources into defeating one of the president’s most outspoken Republican critics.

For Trump, the result represented something larger than one congressional seat. It was another example of the president demonstrating his continued dominance over the Republican Party and punishing a lawmaker who repeatedly challenged him on major issues. Trump had made Massie’s defeat personal, publicly attacking him for months and throwing the full weight of his political operation behind Gallrein.

Thomas Massie had represented Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District since 2012 and built a reputation as a conservative libertarian willing to buck both parties and, increasingly, Trump himself. The district spans Northern Kentucky, including the Kentucky side of the Cincinnati metro area, Louisville suburbs, and rural Appalachian counties.

Massie frequently described himself as a principled conservative who voted with Republicans roughly 90 percent of the time while refusing to follow the party when he believed it violated his beliefs. During the campaign, Massie defended his independence by saying, “I like to say that I vote 91% of the time with Republicans, but when they’re covering up for pedophiles or bankrupting the country or starting another war, you can count me out.”

His critics, however, increasingly portrayed him as disloyal to the broader Republican movement and to Trump personally.

Why Trump Turned Against Massie

Trump’s frustration with Massie grew over several high-profile clashes. According to reporting included in campaign coverage, Massie angered Trump by pushing for the release of Jeffrey Epstein-related Justice Department files, criticizing the Iran war, and opposing major Trump-backed legislation, including domestic tax policy measures. Massie also voted against the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” and publicly opposed several foreign policy decisions supported by Trump.

Trump’s language toward Massie became increasingly hostile as the race intensified. During a Kentucky tele-rally, Trump called him “a disastrous Thomas Massie” and declared, “He’s the worst Republican congressman in the history of the country.” In a Truth Social post days before the election, Trump labeled Massie “the worst and most unreliable Republican Congressman in the history of our Country” and urged Kentucky voters to “vote the bum out.”

The contest evolved into a loyalty test inside the Republican Party. Reuters described the race as part of Trump’s broader effort to purge critics from within Republican ranks, similar to recent defeats suffered by other Republicans who challenged him. Political science professor Stephen Voss described the contest as “a battle between ideological purity and party unity.”

Who Is Ed Gallrein?

Ed Gallrein entered the race as a political newcomer but quickly became Trump’s chosen candidate. A former Navy SEAL, fifth-generation farmer, and former military captain, Gallrein campaigned as a loyal supporter of Trump and his “America First” agenda.

Gallrein framed the race as a choice between standing with Trump or standing against him.

“You deserve an authentic, true Republican conservative that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with our president and the Republican Party,” Gallrein told supporters during the campaign. He also called the primary “a pick a side moment,” arguing that voters needed to choose between Massie and “President Trump, the Republican Party and the Constitution.”

Trump enthusiastically embraced Gallrein, famously joking that he initially only needed “a warm body” to defeat Massie but had found “a big, beautiful brain and a great patriot.” Trump personally introduced Gallrein to Kentucky voters and repeatedly promoted him through rallies, social media posts, Truth Social messages, and phone campaigns.

How Trump Helped Bring Massie Down

Trump’s fingerprints were everywhere in the campaign.

NBC News reported that Trump closely monitored the race, posting on Truth Social and X while trying to motivate Republican voters to defeat Massie. He hosted tele-rallies, introduced Gallrein at campaign events, and publicly endorsed him before Gallrein officially launched his congressional bid.

Trump-aligned organizations also spent heavily. MAGA KY Inc., a super PAC founded by former Trump campaign manager Chris LaCavita and Trump pollster Tony Fabrizio, spent millions opposing Massie and supporting Gallrein. Pro-Israel groups, including the Republican Jewish Coalition and organizations tied to major donors such as Miriam Adelson and Paul Singer, also poured money into anti-Massie efforts after Massie opposed military operations involving Iran and voted against aid to Israel.

The result was a flood of campaign ads that dominated television and social media across Northern Kentucky.

The Most Expensive House Primary Ever

The sheer cost of the race shocked even seasoned political observers.

According to AdImpact tracking cited across multiple reports, more than $32 million was spent in the primary, surpassing the previous congressional primary spending record of roughly $25 million. Some reports placed spending at roughly $32.6 million.

Massie’s campaign raised approximately $5.54 million and spent roughly $5.84 million. Gallrein’s campaign raised approximately $3.16 million and spent around $2.62 million. Outside groups accounted for much of the financial war, flooding the district with attack ads and pro-candidate messaging.

Massie argued that billionaires and outside interests were attempting to buy the seat, saying, “How did this race become the most expensive race in the history of Congress for a primary? It’s because three billionaires from outside of Kentucky have funneled millions of dollars in here.”

What People Are Saying

For Trump supporters, Gallrein’s victory became proof that crossing Trump carries political consequences. A senior Trump official told NBC News after the result, “It means the President keeps his commitments.” NBC reporters described Trump as having “put his thumb on the scale” and emerging victorious.

Others framed the race as a warning shot for Republicans tempted to oppose Trump publicly. Reuters reported that a Massie defeat would “strike fear in the hearts of other Republicans who want to keep their jobs as elected officials.”

In the end, Kentucky’s most expensive congressional primary was not only about one seat in Congress. It became a test of Trump’s power inside the Republican Party, and Tuesday night’s result suggested that power remains very real.
