Strange Bedfellows: White Supremacist David Duke Supports Socialist Muslim Mamdani
David Duke’s Praise Raises Awkward Questions
Politics often produces unusual alliances, but few are as startling as seeing former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard David Duke publicly praise New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and one of the candidates he endorsed. Duke’s comments have thrust Mamdani into an uncomfortable spotlight and given critics a new line of attack.
The controversy began after Darializa Avila Chevalier, a Democratic Socialist candidate for New York’s 13th Congressional District who was endorsed by Mamdani, came under scrutiny for deleted social media posts criticizing interracial relationships. In one 2019 post, she attacked “Black men” and “Arab men” for “fetishizing ugly colonizer women.” Those remarks were later praised by David Duke, one of the most notorious white supremacists in modern American history.
David Duke served as Grand Wizard of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan from 1974 to 1980 before later serving in the Louisiana House of Representatives. Throughout his public career, he has promoted white supremacist views and has repeatedly made antisemitic statements. According to the reporting, Duke has described Jews as “a blight” who should “go into the ashcan of history.”
Duke’s public praise carries a unique political stigma. Few public figures would welcome support from someone whose name has become synonymous with racial hatred.
Duke Praised Chevalier
During an interview with the Washington Free Beacon, Duke applauded Chevalier’s controversial comments.
“Well, I think that people have the right to preserve their particular heritage,” Duke said. “And if she’s concerned about preserving her heritage if it’s Somali, or whatever she is, she’s certainly got the right to do that.”
Those remarks made clear that Duke interpreted Chevalier’s comments as consistent with his own long held beliefs about racial separation.
Chevalier, who identifies as Afro-Latina, was one of several socialist candidates endorsed by Mamdani during New York’s Democratic primary elections.
Mamdani’s Endorsement Draws New Attention
Mamdani’s endorsedChevalier and continued to support her despite renewed attention to her past comments. By continuing to back Chevalier after her remarks became widely known, Mamdani left himself vulnerable to exactly the kind of praise he would almost certainly prefer to avoid.
Duke did not stop with praising Chevalier. He also offered favorable comments about Mamdani himself.
“I think that the new mayor of New York was a step forward,” Duke said, although he noted that he disagreed with Mamdani on immigration policy. Duke went on to praise Mamdani’s criticism of Israel, calling it an important issue.
A Political Liability
The reporting notes that Duke has also praised other Democratic politicians in recent years over issues involving Israel, including Representative Ilhan Omar. As a result, critics argue that his endorsements create uncomfortable political associations for progressive politicians who find themselves receiving favorable attention from an extremist figure.
The article also notes that some Democrats had already begun comparing Chevalier’s political impact to David Duke’s notoriety. One unnamed Democrat quoted by journalist Mark Halperin reportedly said, “Chevalier is our David Duke. She is poisoning the possibility of a Democratic majority.” Former Congressman Peter Meijer similarly argued that modern Democrats had not rejected Chevalier as decisively as Republicans rejected Duke during his 1991 Louisiana gubernatorial campaign.
In the author’s opinion, those comparisons illustrate how politically toxic Duke’s approval remains decades after he left elected office.
Note that David Duke has a history of running for political office as a Republican. The Republicans tossed him out, refused to support him in any way. The Democrats do not seem to have this kind of integrity.
An Uncomfortable Optics Problem
One of America’s best known white supremacists publicly praised both a Mamdani-endorsed congressional candidate for her comments regarding interracial relationships and Mamdani himself during the same interview.
Mamdani already has many MANY flaws and was still elected mayor of arguably the worlds most powerful city.
Will this be the jab that causes him to lose momentum (besides his really crappy policies in New York)?
Will the Democrat Party finally start to cull the radical losers like Chevalier from its ranks an learn to deal with real problems rather than pushing culture to its limits?
Will David Duke become a proud Democrat because he finally has found a party of nutcases where he fits in?
Stay tuned until next week, same bat time, same bat channel…
