Republicans Call for Second Special Counsel to Investigate 2016 Controversies
At least 20 GOP congressmen are calling to appoint a special counsel to investigate possible wrongdoing by Hillary Clinton and other Democrats during last year’s presidential election.
In a letter to the Justice Department, Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and fellow GOP members of the House Judiciary Committee complain that Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s angle on the Russia investigation fails to take into account “other matters related to the 2016 election and aftermath.” Former FBI Director Robert Mueller was called in as special counsel to lead the Russia investigation after Trump dismissed James Comey in May.
Goodlatte’s letter highlights actions taken by Obama officials including then-FBI Director James Comey, Hillary Clinton, and then-AG Loretta Lynch, insisting that the following issues require further examination:
• Grants of immunity to possible co-conspirators in the Clinton email investigation
• Whether Lynch asked Comey to mislead the public in regards to the Clinton probe
• The State Department’s role in deciding which of Hillary’s emails were made public
• Connections between the Clinton family and foreign entities including Ukraine and Russia
• The unmasking of American citizens’ names in the classified documents at the heart of the wiretapping scandal
Republicans insist that these questions cannot be allowed to “die on the vine” amid the intense Russia focus.
“The American public has a right to know the facts – all of them – surrounding the election and its aftermath,” reads Goodlatte’s letter. “We urge you to appoint a second special counsel to ensure these troubling, unanswered questions are not relegated to the dustbin of history.”
The push to hire a second counsel comes as AG Jeff Sessions suffers increasing pressure from Trump to revisit last year’s controversies concerning Hillary Clinton and Democratic officials. Rumor has it that his job is on the line.
Meanwhile, the Dems are frustrated with Republicans’ efforts to bring back last year’s problems as they try to focus on the question of Russian interference.
But recent developments, including Comey’s testimony in June, have fueled the interest in returning to last year’s controversies.
“I don’t think that the crimes of the prior administration…should be forgotten just because Hillary lost the election,” argues Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL).
Editor’s note: I don’t understand why this hasn’t already happened. The least rumor of Trump admin wrongdoing is pounced on by the liberal media. But Democrat crimes rise to the level of treason. This has to be investigated.
If ya'll say so, E.D., then it must be so. MSNBC vs PBP challenge and compare. Scandals, they pop up…
Whoops, I meant Robert.
I was referring to Roger being mentally unhinged. He's the one that was ranting. Hell, I support Trump. I don't…
