Maybe Trump Should Pull ICE Out of Minnesota

Whether you think ICE is doing a good job or not, you have to admit that the optics are bad. The radical left has been successful in promoting violent protests by labeling ICE as a Nazi Gestapo – and selling their hyperbolic and mostly bogus anti-ICE narrative to a large segment of the gullible public.

Perhaps President Trump should order a change in strategy. He should pull all ICE agents out of Minnesota as Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey have demanded – and out of California, if Governor Gavin Newsom makes similar demands.

In announcing this change of strategy, Trump can reaffirm his right and authority to send them. But in view of the state’s leaders promoting insurrection by inciting public protest and violence – endangering ICE agents and interfering with their operations – he has decided to withdraw all ICE activities in Minnesota.

Trump would take similar action in any city or state in which local leaders oppose ICE agents in their communities and mobilize elements of the public to actively interfere with and attack agents.

In announcing this change of policy, Trump would point out that ICE resources can be better and more effectively used in states and communities where local leadership requests or accepts such help – and where local law enforcement will be supportive. In communities where courts and sheriff’s offices will support turning over criminal illegal aliens to ICE and take action against rioters.

ICE can be more effective in removing illegal aliens – removing more – where the local political leadership is cooperative. In states like Minnesota, the mission to remove illegal aliens is undermined by the need to protect ICE personnel and facilities. It requires the deployment of agents who would be more effective in other locales. Basically, more illegal aliens would be deported from America by not deploying an excessive number of agents in states where their mission is thwarted by hostile political leadership and the mobs they produce.

ICE agents would remain out of states like Minnesota until Walz, or his replacement, makes a specific request for ICE support — and assures the cooperation of local courts and police.

Of course, the new policy comes with some serious downsides – in the spirit of being careful what you ask for. There is likely to be an uptick in crimes committed by illegal aliens. The criminals would no longer be removed from the streets of Minnesota and Minneapolis. Without the fear of ICE, the criminal class will be more emboldened.

Recognizing Minnesota as a safer place for criminal activities will entice criminals to settle there – just as sanctuary cities have been the loci for the drug cartels, the gangs and the most dangerous criminals who have crossed America’s southern border illegally

Trump could have the Department of Justice maintain a public ledger of the crimes committed in Minnesota by illegal criminal migrants and publish it each month. These are crimes that might not have occurred if ICE had been allowed to remove the criminals from the streets.

The removal of ICE agents would not impact on FBI operations in the state. It would not end any DOJ investigations of the massive welfare fraud in Minnesota.

Yes, pulling ICE out of Minnesota — and potentially out of other states – is a wild idea. But it would greatly reduce the demonization of ICE. It would end all those bad optics confrontations. There would be no more hyperbolic political narratives about Gestapo tactics. It would be a win for Trump – and ironically a win for Walz and Frey, and a win for the mobs who brought violence to the streets. The big winners, however, would be the criminal aliens who Walz and Frey have protected. The lonely losers would be the rational law-aiding people of Minnesota – and they would have only their elected leaders like Walz and Frey to blame.

So, there ‘tis.
