Judge Brett Kavanaugh has been confirmed by the Senate by a vote of 50-48 and is officially elevated to U.S. Supreme Court. He replaces Associate Justice Anthony Kennedy who retired in June.
Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska broke ranks and opposed Kavanaugh’s confirmation. Out of courtesy to Senator Daines who was at his daughter’s wedding and would have had to fly in, she voted “present”. Democratic Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia voted for Kavanaugh.
His confirmation hearing was marred by vicious attacks from the left, and accusations of abuse during his high school days, charges judged to be unsupported the right and by subsequent FBI investigations.
This is a major victory for President Trump and a boost to the GOP in time for mid-terms. Many speculate that the viciousness of the attack and the subsequent loss by the Democrats could be a negative influence for the Democrats in the mid-term election.
