Cheney is no Lincoln
In her concession speech, Congresswoman Liz Cheney not only alluded to arguably America’s greatest President – and the political founder of the Republican party – Abraham Lincoln. That is not uncommon for GOP Candidates and Party leaders. Republican organizations across the country have an annual Lincoln Day Dinner.
I have a special respect for Lincoln. On my bookshelves are more than 100 books on the 16th President – including many penned by people who knew him personally. Those are among my favorite reading. I have images and Lincolnian artifacts displayed in my home – including original photographs. My favorite is Lincoln and his son.
I was bothered by Cheney’s references to Lincoln because they were self-serving. She was not alluding to Lincoln to make points on principles – but rather in a comparison between Old Abe and herself.
She noted that he had lost elections before ascending to the presidency. That appeared to be a comparison to her crushing defeat and her intimation that she may be a candidate for President in 2024.
She suggested that the times leading up to Lincoln’s election to the highest office in the land were similar to what we see today – both being a run-up to a civil war.
Then there is that civil war narrative currently popular with those on the left – Democrats, the media and Cheney.
Anyone who knows American history would immediately see the utter lack of legitimacy in the comparison. In fact, I see nothing going on that remotely provides evidence of an imminent civil war – or even an ongoing insurrection … or coup attempt. Those who say we are in a particularly dangerous time in terms of political violence did not live through – or even hear about — the 1960s when the left was bombing, rioting (insurrecting?) and killing.
Racist Democrats killed President Kennedy and Martin Luther King. An international terrorist killed Senator Robert Kennedy. A left-wing shot and crippled Governor George Wallace as he was campaigning for President. Hundreds of thousands of left-wing protestors descended on Washington and even breached the Capitol Building. All that, and no one was claiming that the American Republic was teetering….
Shortly after Lincoln was elected – and before he was inaugurated – southern Democrat states started seceding from the Union. Both sides were building armies of millions of young men – and more than 400,000 died in five years of bloody battles.
As divided as America may be political, there is no broad sentiment for civil war. While there has been political violence, it has not come close to a critical mass that would have neighbors shooting at neighbors.
And speaking of the instance of violence, have you noticed the emphasis on violence from nutcases on the right and the totally dismissing of violence from nutcases on the left? Example: Ricky Shiffer, the guy who tried to breach the FBI office in Cincinnati with a nail gun – and was killed by FBI agents — was all over the news for days, and still is. Conversely, the story of the fellow who went to the home of Justice Brett Kavanaugh armed with intent to kill him has fallen off the radar – and never gets mentioned in stories dealing with a rise in domestic violence. Same with the attack by the women’s terrorist organization attacking pro-life operations. But I digress.
Cheney and her newfound friends of the left can talk about insurrections, coup attempts, civil wars, and the imminent fall of the American Republic, but that hyperbolic rhetoric is unnecessarily causing division and unrest. No amount of sanctimonious self-serving perceptive claims of courage, principle, and nobility can change that reality.
I understand that Cheney’s voting record is very conservative, but her main effort today is to empower the left-wing Democrats to defeat Republicans in November. That makes her an agent of the left. In her case, the past is not a prologue.
Cheney is no Lincoln – and shame on her for falsely appropriating the memory and meaning of the 16th President.

You would not only kick a dog when it’s down, you would curb stomp it’s stomach as it put four legs in the air in submission. Sigh.
It’s not her loss, it’s yours. While you demand compliance, you kill diversity of thought. Apparently, it’s your way or the highway, or worse. To be a Republican, you must accept, heck, you must embrace The Big Lie. You must reject any Trump association with the Capitol insurrection or that an insurrection was even under way, as the President watched on TV, tossed burgers at the wall, and did nothing, for hour upon hour, upon hour. Mike Pence was so scared of everything happening that he wouldn’t even get into the Secret Service car having lost all trust in those protecting him (as well he should have been), Hawley thumbed up the violent mob and then ran like a coward to save himself. And a number of Republicans resigned immediately, some days later, and some testified — you condemn them all for telling their truths.
People supporting Trump’s Big Lie are going to jail. Soon his upper echelon will be indicted, tried, and off to jail. Not sure Trump will be indicted, or for what, for his January 6th activities, or lack thereof, but I don’t see the value of trashing Cheney over and over after her trouncing in the vote as apparently you do. Have a good gloat, you wear it well.
Cheney deserved to lose. She agreed to help the Democrats in what was essentially a Democrat campaign event.
You seem to merge all of the Democrat conspiracies and then pour them out into a big mess. Can I recommend a good writing school?
Not based on your prose can you select a good writing school. You might break down and invest in a decent search engine, spell checker, and archiving capability for your bargain basement designed website.
Meanwhile, merger? The Big Lie results in the 1/6 insurrection. Do you actually have any facts or just spew.

How many good Republicans have you tossed under the bus in fealty to your orange haired King of Chaos creating your ever shrinking party of exclusionary thought. Cheny’s just the latest in a long list of a the gallows party that now can only come up with short bus candidates that will soon fail to retake the Senate, maybe lose the House to a President with s shaky economy, high inflation, and very low approval. Cheney is the demon spawn of her father, and supports the same odious policies as her father. And yet, she still has the intelligence to recognize how dangerous Trump was to the country, and the integrity to risk her position to do something about it (two traits that about 90% of Republicans in Congress don’t have).
Doesn’t matter that she lost a primary. She’s setting herself up either as a Presidential candidate, and/or as a founder of a new, alternative conservative party. Trump was the end of a viable Republican Party.

Thank you for reminding us of all of the things that many (not all, not Larry) Republicans have become: Lie believers, fear mongers, Trump idolators, spinsters, and cheeseburger destroyers! I can handle Trump throwing Mr. Barr or other truth tellers, even Ivanka or Jared against the wall, but for God sake, not an innocent cheeseburger!! As someone who grew up with some poverty, I cannot see the value of any of the aforementioned individuals nearly as well as I can see the value of a cheeseburger! In my youth, would have licked that sucker off of the wall!!!
Now, I do respect Larry’s in-depth knowledge of former POTUS Lincoln. And the fact that he has turned his house into a mini Lincoln museum explains much of his optics. But, I disagree with his statements about Ms. Cheney. I do not think she was talking to pump herself up or to say that she is a modern day Mr. Lincoln. I think what she was talking about is that her political trajectory bears resemblance to the political trajectory of Lincoln (which is all known and verified). And that standing up for unabashed absolute truth and principle despite voter opinions as Mr. Lincoln did, should be the standard, and that such truth is not the standard of the GOP. Stirring up the masses using the big lie is right now the best way to hang on to GOP voter base, and several congressmen have privately admitted such while also admitting they do not believe the lie. I do agree with Larry that Ms. Cheney’s pursuit of the truth is helping Democrats some amount but I am unsure how much since most Democrats already knew it was a big lie. I think it does inform we independents who usually sit on the fence longer until the facts are in. But I do not think that election fraud is the biggest lie. I think repeal and replace is a lie that affected more Americans. I think the Trump tax breaks was also a huge lie that swindled money from many Americans and gave most of it to corporations whom after the tax breaks did not lower their prices a cent!!!

Actually if you go back far enough in history to the 1600’s you will find Trump’s family name was Drumpft, not Trump. They changed it. The timing of the change is not certain, but the change is documented. Drumpft in German means “drum”. Trump believes, as do many, that he has many situations in common with POTUS Lincoln, but DNA is not one of them! Lincolns great great grandfather Mordecai came from PA, the county of Berks. I know because I used to live there! But I am sure Larry with his 100 books and household mini museum will tell you the same thing.
Drumpf (no T at the end) is a corruption of Trumpf which comes from Trommel which is a drum. (D’s and T’s are regularly confused in a lot of German dialects). But the name probably implies that someone back the line was a military drummer. Not as in a musical drummer, but more keeping a steady cadence to march by. “Beating the drums of war”, and apt description of Donald Trump.

Larry, I find it very interesting that you profess such an admiration for Lincoln, because as head of the newly formed Republican Party, he was one of the most progressive people in the Nation (he was so liberal that he drove the conservative south to declare war). I too think that Lincoln was a great President, but then I believe that the Nation should make changes where needed and focus on improving people’s lives, rather than being stuck in “that’s the way we’ve always done it” mode. Of course, how could we tell that Larry Horowitz wrote a post without selective editing-you seem to have forgotten that the guy who attacked the FBI office in Cincinnati also had an assault rifle. So they are still discussing that attack down in Boca-haven’t heard about it on the local or National news for several days where I live. The guy who showed up armed at Kavanaugh’s house? Recall he turned himself in before doing anything-there really wasn’t much to discuss…. And you love to bring up the southern biggots who formerly were Democrats-but you conveniently don’t seem to understand that Nixon made them feel welcome in the Republican Party, where they still reside…. As I pointed out, there really wasn’t much of a story with the crazy guy who went to DC with weapons, he turned himself into the police-is that really a story? And no, I typically do not watch CNN, but I do read their website and haven’t seen much discussion of the guy who went to the FBI HQ in Cincinnati (with an assault rifle I might add)… However, if you think that the White Nationalists just disappeared off the face of the earth in the 60’s when Democrats started pushing for civil rights, you really were asleep during that time period and have no business writing blogs that others might read (Does the name Charlottesville ring any bells? If you knew your history, you would know that the Republican’s Party was the prime mover behind the civil rights movement — Eisenhower’s 1956 and 1960 civil rights acts. And it was only because of overwhelming support in Congress by Republicans — and the opposition and filibusters by Democrats — that we got the 1964 Civil Right Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act — the latter of which was written and introduced into the Senate by Republican Senator Dirksen. And Since you are such a follower of current events, I am sure you know that Trump condemned the Nazis in Charlottesville as an exception to his statement that there were good folks on both sides. He was referring to those rightfully debating the future of the statues. Sorry … YOU are wrong on all counts … besides being an loathsome anti-Semite. Ignorance and hate are an ugly combination.
