Will ICE Conduct Immigration Enforcement at Airports? Trump Won’t Rule it Out
Earlier this week ICE agents began to be deployed at airports to “ease the burden” on unpaid TSA workers. Right now, they seem to be providing “perimeter security,” but their presence has raised concerns that they may conduct “immigration enforcement” at the terminals, something that President Trump has not “ruled out.”
“What I see ICE agents doing is helping TSA plug the holes of security,” White House Border Czar Tom Homan told ABC News on March 23.
However, on that same day President Donald Trump told reporters that the ICE agents assigned to airports will also continue to enforce immigration laws.
“They really are a high-level group of people, and they love it because they’re able to now arrest illegals as they come into the country. That’s very fertile territory,” Trump said during a gaggle with reporters on the tarmac in Palm Beach, Florida. “But that’s not why they’re there. They’re really there to help.”
Trump went on to say, “If that’s not enough, I’ll bring in the National Guard.”
Homan said that if ICE agents see “illegal activity,” they will take action because they are federal law enforcement officers.
Asked whether the ICE agents will be carrying out immigration enforcement at airports, Homan said, “We’re not going to ignore illegal conduct in the airport whether it’s human trafficking, whether it’s alien smuggling with somebody that’s wanted, whether it’s … someone that they believe they have reasonable suspicion to talk to because they feel there’s a criminal activity in front of them.”
“Of course, anybody would need probable cause to make any arrests, but yeah, they’re law enforcement officers and they’re not going to ignore the law while we’re there,” Homan said.
“I’m leaving it up to the TSA Administrator, who’s an expert airport operations,” Homan added. “Where can we plug the holes? Where can we increase security, especially in this heightened security environment, because what’s going on the world? Where can we help you to move those lines and American people quicker to inspections while the same time maintaining security at the airport?”
As ICE agents began showing up at airports, Trump posted a message on social media asking them to refrain from wearing masks while helping with airport security.
“I would greatly appreciate, however, NO MASKS, when helping our Country out of the Democrat caused MESS at the airports,” Trump said in his post, adding that he is a “BIG proponent” of ICE agents wearing masks when they “search for, and are forced to deal with, hardened criminals.”
Asked by reporters on Air Force One why he wants ICE agents to remove their masks at airports, Trump replied, “Because the people coming into the airport, typically speaking, aren’t murderers, killers, drug dealers, etc. There may be a few of them. But there aren’t many.”
Immigration officials wearing masks have been a key issue for critics in Trump’s nationwide mass deportation program.
Trump added that typical travelers at airports are “people that want to come into the country, and that want to leave the country, going to maybe their home countries, so I didn’t think it was an appropriate look for an airport.”
Homan followed that up saying that the deployment of ICE would largely free up TSA agents for specialized tasks, like passenger and bag screening.
Homan, however, said ICE agents are not trained to do specialized work like screening passengers and running X-ray machines.
DHS funding battle continues
Democrats have blocked funding for the Department of Homeland Security in an effort to push for policy reforms to ICE, whose aggressive tactics in enforcing immigration laws have prompted protests and lawsuits across the country.
The DHS reforms that Democratic lawmakers have proposed include requiring ICE agents not to wear face masks, be equipped with body cameras and have warrants signed by a judge before entering homes and businesses.
Republicans have, so far, rejected those proposals.
Why not? Bait and catch. And arrest the people who try to stop them. Force for force
I have issues with Democrats demanding that ICE agents not wear masks when they are hunting down criminal illegals and yet it is OK for ANTIFA groups to be totally hidden in their masks and outfits. We can see who they want to protect and it is not the American people, or those working to keep us safe from rapists, murderers, criminals.
The job of ICE and CBP is to stop the illegal entrance into our country by those who choose to “sneak” in. The airports are a means for illegals to come in. So why shouldn’t they be able to do their job at the airports? Illegals will use any way they can to come into our country, and it is up to the Federal Agents to prevent that from happening.
Manny, you honestly think ICE is there for illegals? Do you even have a clue how many illegals fly? How many go first class? How many have they caught?
Don’t we have customs agents at customs in the airport? They always checked me through when flying in from outside the country.
If that’s the case, then why are they in the domestic terminals?

Don’t matter, it’s over, Trump did the right thing and signed an EO to cover TSA pay. The Senate passed a bill that heads to the House and if Johnson has not sent them home yet, should have a vote.
Democrats are not showing tantrum when they offered to fund TSA a dozen times and were turned down by Republicans including Trump who has hooked Save America Act to his signing of the spending bill. That dog don’t hunt. Nor do Thune/Johnson bills with other poison pills like warrantless searches via administrative orders. Democrats want an ICE rebuild, reform, and reorganization to be a force that adheres to the rule of law starting with warrants just like a real State or Local PD. Republicans are against that desiring the continuance of a masked, secret police force that reports to the President and not much else. That may be OK, not really, but may be OK on the border, but not in our streets, not in our bedrooms. Republicans used to stand up against any and all forms of Federal intrusion into our lives from all levels and aspects. At least before you bowed and kowtowed to your Felon King. Now you love Federal control over as many aspects of your lives as Trump demands. Federal police on your streets, your secret voting info in Trump’s hands, your Federal social security info in Musk’s hands at Don’s request, and so many more personal securities and liberties no more. Privacy erodes under this management.
Funny, Republicans used to stand pretty firm for law and order, things like warrants, due process, and habeas corpus. Used to really go up in arms at the thought of the military roaming their streets previously controlled by the people under State’s Rights. But when people are afraid, and you are very afraid, they become willing to give up personal privacy and liberty. With good reason, the Felon King has told you to fear, to hate, to lash out. The brown people are here; the Democrats are there, what about Canada? When people are afraid, personal liberties are the first thing tossed out the window in the name of security and safety. I do not like having the military on our streets, in our neighborhoods, in our pants, whether it’s the National Guard policing in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland (Oregon), Memphis, and New Orleans. Or whether it’s sending in troops to protect Federal Buildings like ICE houses. I thought the Constitution stood against that except for National Emergencies, of which crime is not, not now.
I do not like masked men with guns without papers disappearing people no matter what the crime, but especially for the $250 misdemeanor of crossing the border. Without a warrant, I don’t want them arresting anyone. These guys are out of control shooting citizens, detaining and even deporting innocents, they need to be held to the same level of accountability as our State and Local Police. Period. That’s what this shutdown is about. Democrats have put bills up and are more than willing to fund everything but ICE; ICE has plenty of budget to keep going even in the shutdown, so untether it from Save America, step up and support ICE reforms to make them operate like our other branches of law enforcement and do what you used to in support of the rule of law that respected personal freedoms, not destroying them.
If these guys turn up at our polling places, it will be an epic clusterfuck.

Being truthful (you should try it), government shutdowns generally occur when Congress and the President can’t agree on budget, or something else and budget is used for leverage. Therefore, almost by definition, both parties are involved. As to who owns it, that’s based on public perception. Plus, since it’s a 60-vote threshold, the minority can often act as a majority meaning one party can own the Oval plus both chambers but still not have a pot to piss in over the minority.
