Everyone is missing the point of the NYT 1619 project.

I am not a Nostradamus by any means, however I firmly believe the project sets the stage for the 2020 Democratic Nominee to make the campaign promise of reparations for Blacks in this country (Essentially buying the vote).

They need to do this because with Trump in office the Black as well as all minority unemployment is at its lowest levels ever recorded.

The Dems see this as a possible loss of the democratic voting block of Blacks, for them this cannot happen!

I only hope that the Black Democratic voter figures out work may be hard, you may not even like it, but it can pull you out of poverty.

As I told my daughter growing up, it takes ZERO effort to fail at anything. Success takes hard work and even that has no guarantees, however if you want to succeed you have to put in effort.

Trump is offering effort, not a handout.

I just hope they vote for success and not failure.

You got that right. Why would anyone want to go backwards with what Trump has already accomplished? Why would anyone want more taxes taken from their pay checks ?

I disagree with you in that more minorities including Blacks are employed and drawing in larger wages than they have before. When an economy starts booming like the present one, everyone wins including the minorities. All one has to do is apply for a job and they have one. The problem is that Government has created a class of people that are smarter, and can figure out which is better. Hypothetically if a person can draw $4000 a month from government assistance they feel good. Now they go out and get a job and the amount they make is deducted off the $4000 a month and although they worked they make the same amount. In some cases their government assistance is completely cut off including health care. So what would you do, enjoy a work free life and live a life you can belly ache about and get more or start to work, lose income and benefits? Any logical person picks the sitting on ones butt and racking it in when they know it will do no good to get a job.
So what’s the cure? I suggest a 4 year plan for everyone on welfare. First year you get it all, second year cut it by 25% with no penalty for working, third year cut it by 50% with no penalty for working, fourth year cut it by 75% still with no penalty and by the end of the year the welfare door is closed. During that 4 year period you go to school and learn a trade and get a real education. One other qualifier, in order to get any welfare from day one an applicant must submit to random drug testing with the first failure being a 30 day suspension in benefits, second failure removal from welfare for a period of one year, third failure removal from welfare for a period of 10 years to life. Stoned workers present a danger to other workers and productivity is lost so why would anyone want to work with them?

Trump’s partisan base—which it appears that Mr. Horist and a majority of viewers of this site are members of as well as Conservative media–have completely overblown Donald Trump’s economy success. At the same time they have not given credit where credit is due to the foundational policies and long term success that the economy achieved under President Obama. It’s true that since Trump was elected African American unemployment declined from 7.7% to 6%–that 6% number is based on Bureau of Labor stats from the US government as are all stats quoted herein is; but the 6% number is the one that Trump (and Hannity and Limbaugh and etc.) has bragged incessantly about. That was achieved in November 2018. But then it ticked up to 7% in February 2019 then went back down. So to be accurate it has fluctuated—just like the overall job numbers fluctuate and just like it did under Obama and every president. But Trump & co fail to mention that part because they are so intent on boasting.

It must be stated that Obama inherited a completely different economic scenario than Trump–a far far worse economy situation than Trump did. O was handed the worst recession since 1929–plus two major foreign wars to fight. At the beginning of Obama’s presidency African American unemployment began at 12.7%. Then it rose–like all unemployment did to a high of 16.8% in 2011 as the economy was sorted out and recover and job declines slowly ended until by June 2011 the economy began creating new jobs again instead of losing jobs. From then forward overall unemployment declined significantly for the next 8 years and AfAm unemployment started a significant downward trend—to 7.7% by December 2017. By any measure of calculation that is a resounding significant success. It has continued on a downward trend since the 2016 election–just like the overall unemployment #s have. Give Trump his due on the economy but please stop leaving out Obama’s foundational success which has continued to fuel the present economic success. The economy didn’t suddenly improve, gain strength and get significantly better because Donald Trump was elected president; that is a silly trope. The economy was already performing well for 5 1/2 years. To say it otherwise is rank partisanship.

When Trump succeeds in growing the economy for 75 continuous months—like the Obama economy did and gains or surpasses 15 million new jobs created–like Obama’s economy did in 5 1/2 yrs–then he can brag and his base can spike the ball. But until he does that—he and his base needs to stop bragging and end the partisan sniping.

What the real test for Mr. Trump is-is how well the economy holds up with all of the cabinet turnovers, the tariffs, and the daily circular nonsense that the Trump Administration applies. When the economy falters–and it will–can Trump succeed as well as Obama did? THAT is the question. But first Mr. Trump has to get re-elected and that is looking like a very difficult uphill battle. In the mean time the American people and sick and tired of the savage nonsense and the boastful arrogance. Just do your job and shut up Mr. President. African Americans and all Americans need a leader not an arrogant partisan demagogue.
