U.N. Says 12 Years Left to Stop the ‘Climate Catastrophe’

<p>&&num;8220&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>In the newly released report from the United Nations &lpar;U&period;N&period;&rpar;&comma; the organization&&num;8217&semi;s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change gives the world 12 years to control climate change and to stop the catastrophic effects of global warming&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;&&num;8221&semi;Failure to act&comma; according to a new report released by the top scientific panel studying climate change&comma; will usher in rising temperatures&comma; rising sea levels and severe weather changes affecting millions of people across the world&comma;&&num;8221&semi;&&num;8221&semi; writes<em> The Spokesman-Review&period;<&sol;em> &&num;8220&semi;&&num;8221&semi;The United Nations&rsquo&semi; Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found that the globe could warm to 1&period;5 Celsius above pre-industrial levels within 15 years&period; And to avoid more serious warming and its various consequences&comma; the global community will need to cut carbon emissions in half by 2030 and be carbon-neutral by 2050&period;&&num;8221&semi;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>91 scientists from 40 countries analyzed more than 6&comma;000 scientific studies pertaining to climate change for the U&period;N&period; Report&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>But global warming stories continue to be ignored by the media due to other stories in today&&num;8217&semi;s active political climate often being deemed more important&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&&num;8220&semi;&&num;8221&semi;There is a lot happening in the nation and the world&comma; a constant rush of news&period; Much of it deserves our attention as journalists and news consumers&comma;&rdquo&semi; wrote Margaret Sullivan for <em>The Washington Post&period;<&sol;em> &ldquo&semi;But we need to figure out how to make the main thing matter&period; In short&comma; when it comes to climate change&comma; we &mdash&semi; the media&comma; the public&comma; the world &mdash&semi; need radical transformation&comma; and we need it now&period;&rdquo&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>However&comma; President Donald Trump rejects the notion of global warming&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Then there&&num;8217&semi;s former Vice President Al Gore who has made ridiculous and incorrect statements about climate change&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>In the late 2000s&comma; Gore suggested that some scientists predicted that the Earth&&num;8217&semi;s ice caps would be completely melted by 2014 due to global warming&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>More recently&comma; Gore was called out by scientists after he made a false climate-change claim about Hurricane Florence&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>He declared that both Hurricane Florence&comma; a hurricane that struck the Carolinas in September and the Typhoon Mangkhut&comma; which hit the Philippines a day later were attributed to the climate change problem&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>However&comma; scientists are pointing out that it is clear that Gore did not fact-check before making his statement since this wasn&&num;8217&semi;t a first-time occurrence&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Gore is now pointing to the U&period;N&period;&&num;8217&semi;s recent report saying its time to take action yet again&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&ldquo&semi;The report will encourage the development of new technologies&comma; which is important&comma;&rdquo&semi; said Gore&period; &ldquo&semi;However&comma; time is running out&comma; so we must capitalize and build on the solutions available today&period;&rdquo&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>But these time limit claims about climate change have been made time and time again&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>In 1989&comma; the U&period;N&period; warned that &ldquo&semi;entire nations could be wiped from the face of the earth&rdquo&semi; if climate change efforts weren&&num;8217&semi;t increased by 2000&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&ldquo&semi;U&period;N&period; issues yet another climate tipping point &mdash&semi; Humans given only 12 more years to make &lsquo&semi;unprecedented changes in all aspects of society&comma;&rsquo&semi;&rdquo&semi; wrote Marc Morano for the <em>Climate Depot&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;em><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&ldquo&semi;Every 10 years&comma; climate scientists say we have 10 years left to save the planet&comma;&rdquo&semi; said Tony Heller of <em>RealClimateScience&period;com&period;<&sol;em> &ldquo&semi;Sometimes they want to save it from global warming&comma; other times they say they want to save it from global cooling&period;&rdquo&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Critics also claim that these statements often aren&&num;8217&semi;t presented with solutions&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>&ldquo&semi;Even with erroneous attribution of extreme weather&sol;climate events and projections using climate models that are running too hot and not fit for purpose of projecting 21st century climate change&comma;
