Trump Taking Leftist Media to the Court over Libel

President Trump is going after the leftist propaganda machinery while he looks forward to his inauguration as the 47th President of the United States in January next year. In a letter to the New York Times (NYT) and Penguin Random House, President Trump has demanded $10 billion in damages over false and defamatory statements made by them to target him.

The latter, which was received by NTY and Penguin Random House a week before the 2024 presidential election, slammed the “defamatory statements” of these media houses as “despicable in their falsity.” Written by Trump’s attorney Edward Andrew Paltzik, the letter was cited by LawandCrime.com among other news sources in calling out NYT as a “full-throated mouthpiece of the Democratic Party.”

In one of the specific instances of NYT’s propaganda against Trump, the letter cited an October 20 article titled “For Trump, a Lifetime of Scandals Heads Toward a Moment of Judgment.” The letter underscores that such anti-Trump falsities have done harm to Trump Media.

President Trump also sued CBS News in October after the channel’s show “60 Minutes” aired Bill Whitaker’s interview with Kamala Harris. The interview footage was edited by the channel before airing it, as CBS admitted, supposedly to make one of her answers appear “more succinct.” Conservatives, including the Trump campaign, blasted the move as an act of election interference. The Trump team filed a lawsuit against CBS on October 31 in the Northern District of Texas Amarillo Division seeking damages worth $10 billion.

CBS has stood by its decision to edit the interview footage and claims that it was not meant to look Harris better as a candidate but “to be clear, accurate and on point.”

Earlier this month, President Trump sent a letter to The Daily Beast, another leftist publication that routinely posts anti-Trump rhetoric, to demand corrections to a series of its articles that accused Trump campaign strategist Chris LaCivita of raking in $22 million to help Trump win the presidential race. The Daily Beast responded by adding an editor’s note to the articles in question to admit an error in reporting. Not satisfied with the publication’s measure, the Trump team followed up with a response on November 12 to demand a full retraction of the original story.

In late October, President Trump also filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) against the Washington Post for illegally contributing to the Harris campaign as it promoted its stories on social media to favor Harris over Trump. The paper had announced just days ago that it would not endorse either candidate. However, in the wake of the paper’s apparent tilt toward the Harris campaign, it lost well over 200,000 subscribers.

Leftist media is also seeing backlash from conservatives working as independent journalists. James O’Keefe, of Project Veritas fame and now the owner of O’Keefe Media Group, had sued CNN after the channel made false claims in 2021 that led to the suspension of Project Veritas from Twitter. Three years later, a federal appeals court has ordered CNN to stand trial in the case.
