In recent polls, former President Donald Trump remains way out ahead of Nikki Haley or anyone else who has announced or is likely to announce that they are vying for the GOP 2024 presidential nomination.
Despite his mounting legal troubles, the Trump juggernaut shows no signs of slowing.
Trump received support from 43% of registered Republicans in the new Feb. 6-13 poll, while 31% said they supported Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, and just 4% picked former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, who announced her White House run last week.
DeSantis is widely expected to run for president but has not announced his intention to do so. Former Vice President Mike Pence, who also is weighing a White House bid, got 7% of Republican support in the poll, essentially tied with Haley.
Haley served in Trump’s administration as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.
The Reuters/Ipsos poll surveyed 1,465 registered Republicans, part of a larger sample of more than 4,000 adults nationwide. The poll’s credibility interval, a measure of precision, was about 3% for registered Republicans.
The latest Quinnipiac poll, released on Feb. 16, found almost the exact same results as the Reuters poll.
When participants were given a list of 14 names of Republicans who either have said they are running for president in 2024 or are seen as potential candidates in a Republican primary, Trump received a similar 42% of the vote among Republican and Republican-leaning voters followed by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis who receives 36%.
Former United Nations Ambassador and South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley received 5%, former Vice President Mike Pence received 4%, and former Secretary of State and CIA Director Mike Pompeo received 4%. No other candidate tops 2 percent of the vote.
Also, according to the Quinnipiac University poll, In a hypothetical general election matchup for president, it is a toss-up between President Biden (48%) and former President Trump (46%) among all registered voters.
It is also a toss-up between President Biden and Governor DeSantis, with 47% of registered voters supporting DeSantis and 46% percent supporting Biden.
