Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently addressed the issue of ANTIFA as an international terrorist organization. That runs contrary to the much more benign description of the left-wing establishment – especially the left-leaning news media.

According to the narrative advanced by those on the left, ANTIFA is not even an organization much less a terrorist group. They claim it is merely an organic street-level protest movement. They ignore its violent nature. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) – which presents itself as a chronicler of terrorist operations on American soil — does not include ANTIFA on iots list – likely due to a left-wing political bias. It is noteworthy that SPLC does point the terrorist finger at a number of right-wing groups, such as clearly non-violent groups as Turning Point USA, Mothers for Liberty, and others.

So, what is the truth?

The truth is that ANTIFA represents a long-standing international network of radical left-wing militants dedicated to violence, intimidation, and the overthrow of Western democratic institutions.

Far from a spontaneous gathering of concerned citizens, it draws its ideological DNA from early 20th-century communist and anarchist movements that glorified street warfare and revolutionary destruction. One need only examine its history to see the pattern of calculated terror.

The roots stretch back to the chaotic aftermath of World War I. In Italy, the Arditi del Popolo formed in 1921 as a militant anti-fascist force of communists and anarchists to combat Mussolini’s Blackshirts through direct action and street battles. In Germany, the Communist Party (KPD) established groups like the Roter Frontkämpferbund in the 1920s, engaging in bloody clashes. By 1932, the KPD formalized Antifaschistische Aktion – the direct predecessor to today’s ANTIFA.

This Stalinist outfit did not merely oppose Nazis. It viciously attacked moderate Social Democrats, labeling them “social fascists,” which fractured the anti-Hitler opposition and helped pave the way for the Nazi rise to power. Irony drips like cheap leftist rhetoric. ANTIFA does not oppose fascism on behalf of democracy but is most closely aligned to communist anti-fascism of World War II.

Following World War II, “ANTIFA” committees sprang up in occupied Germany to hunt Nazis and consolidate communist influence. The modern movement — revived in the 1980s through European autonomist and punk scenes – engages in masked uniformed violence across borders. Today, it operates as a decentralized yet coordinated international hydra, with cells in Europe, North America, and beyond, sharing tactics, funding, and ideology via networks like Antifa International.

Leadership is deliberately opaque – a classic terrorist structure designed to evade accountability. There is no single CEO, but ideological godfathers and operational coordinators steer the ship.

Groups like the Party for Socialism and Liberation and various autonomous collectives provide direction. Funding flows through a murky web of dark money NGOs, billionaire networks, and foreign influences. Reports trace tens of millions from sources linked to George Soros’s Open Society Foundations, the Tides Network, and Arabella Advisors pass-throughs.

International bail and defense funds, such as the International Anti-Fascist Defence Fund, have disbursed funding worth hundreds of thousands to operatives worldwide, including in the United States. Even CCP-linked figures like Neville Roy Singham have been implicated in bankrolling radical Marxist outfits that intersect with ANTIFA activities. Taxpayer dollars have indirectly subsidized the chaos through settlements and grants. ANTIFA is an astroturf terrorist organization with corporate and foreign patronage.

The Trump administration, unlike its predecessors, decided to actually read the room. In September 2025, President Trump signed an Executive Order designating ANTIFA a domestic terrorist organization. Rubio then went further. In November, the State Department slapped Foreign Terrorist Organization and Specially Designated Global Terrorist labels on four overseas ANTIFA affiliates — Germany’s Antifa Ost, Italy’s Informal Anarchist Federation, and Greece’s Armed Proletarian Justice and Revolutionary Class Self-Defense.

The State Department fact sheet, which one assumes the SPLC has somehow never encountered, describes Antifa Ost as conducting years of premeditated hammer attacks on people it decided looked sufficiently fascist. Hungary had already reached the same conclusion in September, after Antifa Ost operatives allegedly took their hammers on tour through Budapest in 2023.

Meanwhile, the Revolutionary Class Self-Defense outfit in Greece claimed credit for planting improvised explosive devices, one at the Greek Ministry of Labor and another at the Hellenic Train offices. Apparently, when your ideology cannot win an argument, you win it with a pipe bomb instead.

The terrorist label fits because ANTIFA employs systematic violence to coerce political outcomes – the very definition of terrorism. Examples abound. During the 2020 riots, ANTIFA-linked militants torched buildings, assaulted police, and declared autonomous zones in cities like Portland and Seattle, holding territory through violence and intimidation while local leaders dithered.

In Minneapolis, ANTIFA cells have blockaded ICE operations, tracked federal agents, and issued threats, leading to federal indictments. European affiliates, such as Germany’s Antifa Ost, have conducted assaults on perceived right-wing targets and even operations abroad, prompting designations as foreign terrorist organizations by the U.S. State Department.

One need only recall the 2017 Charlottesville clashes or repeated doxing, property destruction, and physical attacks on journalists, conservatives, and ordinary citizens who dare disagree. ANTIFA does not debate. It operates with bricks, fireworks, and Molotov cocktails. Its international operations include coordination across borders for protests, training, and mutual aid. ANTIFA is much like a transnational crime syndicate wrapped in revolutionary slogans. Secretary Rubio’s push recognizes this reality, ANTIFA functions as a borderless network advancing anti-American, anti-capitalist extremism through terrorist tactics.

The left’s denial reveals its hypocrisy. While they hyperventilate over January 6th or phantom right-wing threats, they whitewash ANTIFA’s body count and billions in damage. The SPLC’s selective blindness exposes its partisan agenda. Ignoring this threat invites more chaos. Designating ANTIFA properly, disrupting its funding, and prosecuting its foot soldiers with the full force of law are not authoritarian overreaches. They are defenses against ideological barbarians who would burn it all down for their malignant vision of utopia.

History teaches harsh lessons. Weimar Germany’s street violence did not end in communist paradise but totalitarian nightmare. Today’s ANTIFA, with its black flags and red ideology, follows the same destructive playbook. Americans must reject the media’s sanitized fable and confront the truth. ANTIFA is not protest. It is organized international terrorism. The time for polite tolerance has passed. Law and order demand action.

Rubio and the administration have simply stated what the evidence has shown for years. ANTIFA is not a metaphor. It has a lineage stretching back a century, an international network of affiliated cells, financial support, and a body count of assaults, arson, and bombings to its name. Calling it anything less than terrorists is not journalism. It is left-wing propaganda.
