
<p>Last week, President Trump floated the idea of offering bonuses to American mothers who give birth to a child. A <em>New York Times </em>(NYT) story reported that the Trump administration is considering a plan to offer a $5000 bonus to moms who have given birth as an incentive to boost the country’s declining birth rate. The news of the idea has generated mixed feelings among conservatives around the country and a divide in opinion over whether it is a good idea.</p>



<p>Soon after the news of the idea broke, Fox News anchor Jesse Watters played a few clips of comments from liberal media personalities like Whoopi Goldberg and Chuck Todd whining about Trump’s baby bonus idea. Watters seemed to endorse Trump’s idea as he criticized liberals’ reasons for opposing it.</p>

<p>Sarah Gabel Seifert, co-founder and President of the pro-life company EveryLife, appeared on Fox News to celebrate Trump’s idea of a baby bonus, calling it an “incredible policy coming out of the White House” and the right step toward healthy, thriving families in the country.</p>

<p>Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna of Florida and prominent conservative politician Kari Lake of Arizona, along with a number of other famous conservative voices, expressed their support for Trump’s baby bonus idea. Howeve,r other conservatives have expressed disapproval of this approach to boosting the country’s birth rate. Popular conservative commentator Tim Pool called it “a terrible idea” that, if adopted, would lead to a lot of fatherless children in the country. Pool opined that a better incentive to boost child birth is to offer tax exemptions to married couples who have two or more kids.</p>

<p>Joy Pullmann of <em>The Federalist</em> agreed with both points made by Pool. In her article “Why Paying Women To Have Babies Is A Terrible Idea — And What To Do Instead” (April 28), she underscored the need for the government to bring down living costs in the country and thus naturally encourage couples to have more kids. In her words:</p>



<p><em>The major thing government can do to encourage fertility is: stop making existing so bloody expensive. Inflation, remember, is caused by government subsidies. So we need not to increase government payments, but to cut them.</em></p>



<p>Steven Mosher of<em> LifeSite News</em>, the conservative pro-life source of news and commentary, emphasized the point that the right cultural values are more important to cultivate instead of reducing the birth rate issue to economics. He supported his point by citing Russia’s example, where the government has been offering baby bonuses per child birth for well over a decade, only to have their birth rate decline over the years. Mosher attributed the decline in American birth rate largely to “a culture that is profoundly anti-marriage and anti-family.” He wrote:</p>



<p><em>It is incumbent upon each of us to help create a culture of life in our families, emphasizing to our children and grandchildren the joys of family life and the blessing of children. Flood social media with positive postings about the magic of family love.</em></p>
