Russia Rattling the Saber – Is This Leading to War For the US?

As the relationship between Russia and the U.S. continues to get more turbulent, there is more speculation about an approaching war.

“Relations between Russia and the United States can’t get any worse. The only way they can get worse is if a war starts,” said Vladimir Zhirinovsky to Reuters. Zhirinovsky is an ally of Putin and just received a top state award from the Russian president after his pro-Kremlin Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) came third in Russia’s parliamentary election last month.

“Americans voting for a president on Nov. 8 must realize that they are voting for peace on Planet Earth if they vote for Trump. But if they vote for Hillary it’s war. It will be a short movie. There will be Hiroshimas and Nagasakis everywhere.” Zhirinovsky had similar sentiments when speaking with CNN also.  

It looks Putin is ramping up for war. Thursday he told top Russian officials, politicians and their families across the world to return to the Motherland.

This is particularly suspicious timing considering the recent tension about Syria with the Obama administration and that Putin just called off a planned trip to France.

Obama recently accused and condemned the Russian government for the recent email hacks of the Democratic party. And Putin’s abrupt cancelation of his Paris, may be an indicator that relations with the West are at an all-time low.

The conflict over Syria is only putting more of a strain on the already feeble relationship between Russian and the U.S.

“Washington called off bilateral talks with Russia over Syria this month following the collapse of a short-lived, US-Russia-brokered ceasefire in Aleppo and Syria’s renewed offensive against the city’s rebel-held east,” writes CNN.   

The fighting over Syria is petty and it’s unlikely that a direct war between the U.S. and Russia will come of it. But, the real question is what are we fighting for in Syria? It’s doubtful that we will oust the Russians and get a clear victory.

And is it worth it waste resources? If we commit resources and win, what would we get? Likely a radical Islamic brutal dictator, who would be much worse than current leader Assad.

Not to mention, even if we did win, would Syria be a reliable ally to the U.S.? No.

Ultimately, fighting for Syria has little strategic value for us. 

Editor’s note: I don’t believe it will come to all out war, but Obama’s aimless meddling in the Middle East is accomplishing nothing and causing a lot of people to die.
