Republicans Join Democrats to Postpone Important MAGA Legislation

One of the most important pieces of legislation to ensure election integrity was about to become the law of the land when a bunch of Republicans in the House created chaos over voting rules, leading the House to postpone the legislation. MAGA conservatives are left frustrated and demanding accountability of the troublemakers on the Republican side of the aisle.
The House was set to vote on Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act this week, an election integrity bill that would require all voters across the country to present proof of U.S. citizenship while voting in any federal election. The legislation was passed last year in the Republican-led House but was killed in the Senate, which had a Democrat majority at the time.
Now with a majority in both chambers and President Trump in the White House, Republicans were ready to give it another shot. But the House floor was turned against the SAVE vote plan and other Trump-backed bills on Tuesday (April 1) when Anna Paulina Luna, Republican Congresswoman from Florida, and Brittany Pettersen, Democrat Congresswoman from Colorado, jointly forced a vote on another measure – allowing House members who have recently become parents to proxy vote for the first three months of parenthood. Luna and eight other Republicans in the House voted with Democrats to defeat the conservative majority that opposes such a rule.
This “revolt” or “rebellion” by a handful of House Republicans dealt a blow to Speaker Johnson’s plans, and he cancelled the House voting agenda for the rest of the week. Conservatives looking forward to MAGA-backed legislation, particularly the SAVE Act, erupted in disappointment and anger over social media. They called out Congresswoman Luna and other Republicans who colluded with the Democrats to undermine the week’s important legislation plans.
Georgia’s Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene told media outside the House that she opposes Luna’s measure and suggested that if Luna or others want to put parenting over their duty to the public, they should resign and let those serve in the Congress whose parenting responsibility doesn’t hold them from doing their congressional job in person.

MAGA conservative account on X LadyPatriot echoed the same feeling. She wrote: “I am so disappointed in Burchett and Luna. We do not want proxy voting. If you can’t make it to work to do your job, you don’t need to be there at all.”
Another MAGA conservative named Kate slammed Speaker Johnson for canceling the voting plans for the rest of the week. She wrote: “We have a major problem in Congress. It’s time for Speaker Johnson to go…We haven’t codified Trump’s executive orders. We haven’t passed the SAVE Act. We watch members of Congress put bills on the floor that are not important right now.”

Democrats have long opposed election integrity measures, including the requirement of presenting proof of citizenship to be eligible for voting. Citing their so-called experts, they argue that these measures are unnecessary and that voting is mostly secure under existing laws.
However, conservatives hold that Democrats cheat in elections and their opposition to voter ID requirements speaks for their agenda of enabling illegal voting. On Wednesday (April 2), Republican Senator Mike Lee questioned the motives of Democrat leadership in their ongoing lawsuits against the Trump administration over its election integrity efforts. He wrote: “Why are top Democrats suing to allow non-citizens to vote in American elections?”
