<p>Last August, Fusion GPS co-founder Glenn Simpson told lawmakers he believed there was an FBI informant ;inside Trump&rsquo;s presidential campaign team.</p>
<p>Simpson said he got this information from Christopher Steele, the former British spy who ;compiled the infamous &ldquo;anti-Trump&rdquo; dossier with funding from Hillary Clinton via Fusion GPS. ;</p>
<p>Steele&rsquo;s past career as a spy put him in good standing with the FBI, and Simpson cited the existence of an informant within the Trump team as the reason the agency believed ;Steele&#8217;s allegations against Trump.</p>
<p>Simpson&#8217;s claim aoubt an FBI informant was made public in January 2018. The public&#8217;s reaction was explosive, and Fusion GPS responded by suggesting the FBI &ldquo;informant&rdquo; was not actually an informant, but Trump campaign-adviser George Papadopoulos. ;</p>
<p>The accusations against Papadopoulos didn&rsquo;t add up, however, and the claim against him was retracted by an unidentified Fusion GPS source. ;</p>
<p>Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) in January sent Simpson a letter to clarify the situation, to which Simpson&rsquo;s lawyer responded:</p>
<p>&ldquo;I am writing in response to your letter, dated January 11, 2018, in which you have asked about the August 22, 2017 testimony from our client Glenn Simpson that Christopher Steele in the fall of 2016 said he believed the FBI had another source within the Trump organization/campaign. Mr. Simpson stands by his testimony.&rdquo;</p>
<p>If there really was an FBI informant in the Trump campaign, ex-FBI Director James Comey &#8220;should be prosecuted,&#8221; argues Trump lawyer and former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani. ;&ldquo;That would be the biggest scandal in the history of this town, at least involving law enforcement&hellip;If there&rsquo;s a spy, they got nothing from it.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Giuliani&rsquo;s comments follow a <em>New York Times</em> report about the FBI&rsquo;s original investigation into possible connections between Moscow and the Trump campaign. According to the report, FBI officials confirmed &ldquo;at least one government informant met several times with Mr. [Carter] Page and [George] Papadopoulos.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Carter Page is the former Trump adviser who was surveilled based on information contained in the Steele dossier. ;</p>
<p>&ldquo;Wow, word seems to be coming out that the Obama FBI &lsquo;SPIED ON THE TRUMP CAMPAIGN WITH AN EMBEDDED INFORMANT.&rsquo; Andrew McCarthy says, &lsquo;There&rsquo;s probably no doubt that they had at least one confidential informant in the campaign.&rsquo; If so, this is bigger than Watergate!&rdquo; tweeted Trump on Thursday.</p>
<p><strong>Author&rsquo;s note:</strong> Let&rsquo;s remember that the claim about an FBI spy within the Trump campaign came from the same ex-spy who compiled the debunked dossier on Trump. However, if the claim is true, this really is bigger than Watergate. ;</p>
