Questions About Soros' Activity in Macedonia

Republican lawmakers are demanding answers amid claims that billionaire investor George Soros’ Open Society Foundations (OSF) are a front for his liberal political maneuverings in Europe.

The Hungarian-born investor’s activities in Macedonia are particularly concerning, and some believe he is using USAID funds to accomplish leftwing goals. According to its website, USAID is a government agency that “works to end extreme global poverty and enable resilient, democratic societies to realize their potential.”

Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) worries what Soros-linked groups are doing with USAID funds. “I have received credible reports that, over the past few years, the US Mission to Macedonia has actively intervened in the party politics of Macedonia, as well as the shaping of its media environment and civil society, often favoring groups of one political persuasion over another,” writes Lee.

George Soros has a “decisive influence” on Macedonian politics,” agrees former Macedonian Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski. “If it were not for George Soros behind it with all the millions he pours into Macedonia, the entire network of NGOs, media, politicians, inside and out … the economy would be stronger, we would have had more new jobs.”

George Soros controls over 60 NGOs in Macedonia.

“His foundation, in finances and human resources, is the most powerful foundation in the world that has political goals,” Gruevski continues. “After a while, entire institutions, ministries, perhaps governments and their intelligence services, are infected with his views, his ideology, his views and goals.”

In a recently published dossier, the Macedonian initiative Stop Operation Soros (SOS) claims that USAID money is being used to fund left-wing media groups and activists in order to influence the nation’s politics.

“His main base is in Hungary,” says SOS vice president Cvetin Chilimanov. “He’s active in the Ukraine now, in Poland. He’s organizing protests all throughout the Balkans, from Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia. He has one of the highest per-capita expenditures in Macedonia.”

Chilimanov compares the current protests in Macedonia to Black Lives Matter activity in the US. “These protests have targeted the office of the president, the Justice Ministry, the Parliament building, and other government offices, often with enough violence to injure police officers,” reports Breitbart.

Chilimanov accuses the US Embassy in Macedonia of supporting these activists. “This is the most important thing here. The listeners obviously realize how IRS or the EPA were politicized under Obama, but I don’t think a good grasp of the extent to which the State Department was politicized, and USAID, which is the international development agency.”

Laura Silber, a top OSF communications officer, argues that the organization has “supported civil society groups in Hungary who are addressing profound problems in education, health care, media freedom, and corruption. Any attacks on this work and those groups are solely an attempt to deflect attention from government inability to address these issues.”

In a Feb. 9th letter sent to Senator Lee, the State Department claimed that federal money has not gone towards partisan political activities in Macedonia. The letter also noted that the Macedonian branch of OSF (FOSM) had earned three grans from USAID between 2002 and 2017.

The money flowing from USAID to Soros-linked groups is considerable. Between 2012 and 2016, USAID dumped nearly $5 million in taxpayer dollars to the FOSM “Civil Society Project,” an initiative which “aims to empower Macedonian citizens to hold government accountable.”

The letter also referenced a recent “Civic Engagement Project,” which gave an estimated $9.5 million to four organization including FOSM.

“The money is very significant, in fact there is still money in the pipeline, from 2017 to 2021,” says Rep. Christopher Smith (R-NJ). “It’s one thing to do election monitoring, which is a very noble cause to make sure there’s free and fair elections, but it’s quite another thing to be backing parties that Soros and his gang want to see in control of that country.”

Author’s Note: George Soros has ties to Black Lives Matter and the Muslim Brotherhood. He helped fund the violence protests in Ferguson, Missouri and dumped millions into Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama’s election campaigns. Now, he’s trying to crush democracy in the small conservative nation of Macedonia with taxpayer dollars.

Americans deserve to know about this, and we urge the Trump Administration to put a stop to it.
