Portland Mayor Joins Protest, A Joke to Protesters

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler joined protestors Tuesday as they gathered outside a federal courthouse to protest the presence of federal police sent to the area by President Trump to de-escalate ongoing unrest. Tuesday marked the 55th consecutive night of protests in Portland.

Mayor Wheeler stood his ground when federal police opened up with tear gas, but fled into a nearby building when protestors started throwing water bottles and other projectiles his way.

In spite of his participation, protestors mocked Wheeler and demanded his resignation. Some held signs reading “Tear Gas Ted.”

Later that night, Wheeler described the use of tear gas as an “overreaction” not warranted by the protestors’ actions. “This is flat-out urban warfare and it’s being brought on this country by the president and it’s got to stop now.”

Earlier Tuesday, Wheeler attended a “listening session” with protestors during which he praised them for opposing President Trump’s “occupation” of the city with federal officers.

“I think what we’re doing tonight is actually the best thing we can do right now,” said Wheeler. “Be here, be heard, be unified, and be clear. We didn’t want them, we didn’t ask for them, they’re not trained for what they’re being asked to do. And we want them to leave.”

President Trump reacted to the ordeal by describing Wheeler as the “radical left mayor of Portland” who was “booed and shouted out of existence by the agitators and anarchists.” DHS officials denied accusations that federal agents were exacerbating the unrest in Portland and criticized Wheeler for supporting the criminality of the protestors’ behavior.

Author’s Note: Does Wheeler really think that by stepping into a protest and yelling “Black Lives Matter,” the people of Portland will suddenly support him or forget that he is indeed in charge of the police they are protesting? Portland doesn’t give a crap about Wheeler; they think he is a joke and they want him out of office. It is unbelievable that any US mayor would encourage a siege of his own city to protest police under his own administration.
