Newly elected Speaker of the House Paul Ryan appeared on NBC’s “Meet the Press” to discuss what is perhaps the most poignant issue in the presidential race: immigration. During the interview, Ryan repeatedly told NBC host Chuck Todd that we can’t trust Obama on this issue. ;

After promising that as Speaker he would maintain a “completely neutral” stance in regards to the presidential election, Ryan assured his host that when it comes to the topic of immigration, he is “an open book.” ;

“You told me you were in favor of an eventual path to citizenship,” said Todd. “Well, legal status is what I was talking about,” explained the Speaker. ;

He then went on to speak about Obama and the fact that he tried to evade Congress with executive order. “On immigration, I don’t think we can trust the president,” Paul Ryan said to Chuck Todd. ;

“The president has proven himself untrustworthy on this issue, because he tried to unilaterally rewrite the law himself,” said Ryan. “Presidents don’t write laws. Congress does. The president’s proven himself to be untrustworthy on this issue,” said the Speaker. ;

“I think if we reach consensus on something like border enforcement, interior security, that’s one thing. But I do not believe we should advance comprehensive immigration legislation with a president who’s proven himself untrustworthy on the issue.” ;
