NYC Mayor Cuts $1B From Police Budget

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio says he will shift $1 billion from the NYPD’s $5.9 billion budget to youth and social services as part of a police reform proposal that addresses protestors’ demands following the death of George Floyd.

“People do not protest for the sake of protest, they protest to achieve change,” says de Blasio. “And now we must deliver that change.”

The proposal also seeks to move code enforcement for street vending from the NYPD to civilian agencies, hire “community ambassadors” to act as liaisons between cops and civilians, and repeal a law that keeps police officers’ personnel records confidential.

“I want it to be abundantly clear to all New Yorkers. These are first steps to what will be 18 months of making intense change in this city,” promised de Blasio. “This is a transformative moment.”

Speaking on WNYC radio’s “The Brain Lehrer Show,” de Blasio said that all agencies would face cuts, regardless of police reform, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

There will be cuts to “every single agency, uniform and civilian,” he said. Up to 22,000 municipal employees could lose their jobs.

“If we don’t get another source of revenue, we literally have no choice but to start cutting back our workforce, which I do not want to do one bit,” continued de Blasio. “I’m trying to find another source of revenue and there’s only two places I can get it: Washington, which isn’t acting, and Albany, which could give us the borrowing authority to help us tide over and I’m hoping to achieve that in the next few days.”

Economists predict New York City will lose $9 billion in revenue over the next two years as tourism declines, residents flee, and businesses close. To date, the city has reported more than 21,900 deaths from COVID-19.

Author’s Note: Mayor Bill de Blasio is going to singlehandedly destroy New York City. The NYPD may need training and education (as does everybody), but not fewer cops.

Former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani cleaned up the city by putting professional police officers on the streets and enforcing the law, not by caving to protestors’ demands. Let’s just hope the city isn’t too far gone by next year’s election so that someone smarter can come in and fix de Blasio’s mistakes.

Editor’s Note: This is the very definition of “mob rule,” one of the worst possible forms of government. A very few people riot and destroy property in New York and the mayor moves quickly to appease them.  This will end badly.

Deblasio BETTER cut his personal security detail completely. If WE don’t need cops, then neither does he!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The demise of NYC. I hope the people that are left there in two years are smart enough to vote in someone who will clean it up like Giuliani did. It’s incredibly sad to see what this marxist-leaning mayor has done to take this city down in only six years. Wake up, everyone! This is what will happen to America if Biden is voted in. I don’t care what you think of Trump’s style or his tweets – he is the person standing between us and mob rule. God bless us all.

well the first thing the PD should do is remove police protection from politicians, then they should not reduce police people but reduce the hours of police protection. So at the current budget the police can be on duty from 6am to 10pm, or maybe 3 weeks out of the month, after a short time of this the citizen unrest will take over and force the mayor to replace the budget shortfall
