
<p>Concerns among conservatives over the Islamist influence in multiple states across the country continue to rise and the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, has recently taken an important measure that addresses these concerns directly. Governor Abbott designated the Muslim advocacy organization Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) a foreign terrorist organization along with the Muslim Brotherhood.</p>



<p>In a proclamation issued on November 18, Governor Abbott notified the Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson of his move to designate both the Muslim Brotherhood and its successor organization CAIR as foreign terrorist organizations. Both of these were also designated as transnational criminal organizations by the same proclamation issued by Mr. Abbott.</p>



<p>Responding to Governor Abbott’s proclamation, a CAIR spokesperson was cited in <em>The Western Journal</em> (November 23) dismissing the measure as a publicity stunt that lacks any factual or legal basis. The spokesperson from CAIR was quoted as:</p>



<p><em>“By defaming a prominent American Muslim institution with debunked conspiracy theories and made-up quotes, Mr. Abbott has once again shown that his top priority is advancing anti-Muslim bigotry, not serving the people of Texas.”</em></p>



<p>Conservatives have been watchful of CAIR for decades. But more recently, these worries have escalated to concerns over national security. Earlier this year, Republican Congressman Randy Fine of Florida called for designating CAIR and Muslim Brotherhood terrorist organizations.</p>

<p>Well over a decade ago, former Congresswoman Michele Bachmann of Minnesota warned Americans against the Islamist agenda of the Saudi-based Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) that heavily influenced the Obama administration to enforce certain Islamic codes of speech in the United States. A clip from her speech at an event of The Family Research Council in September 2012 was recently shared on X to remind the root cause of the problem of Islamist influence in America.</p>

<p>The problem has persisted beyond the Obama administration and concerned Christian conservatives, the majority of MAGA base, find no relief owing to President Trump’s initial hesitance to address the long-standing concerns over Muslim Brotherhood’s involvement in anti-American activities. However, following Governor’s Abbott’s proclamation, Trump also signed an executive order on November 24 to work on designating certain chapters of Muslim Brotherhood as terrorist groups. Reporting on the development, <em>The Hill</em> wrote:</p>



<p><em>Trump had in recent days said he intended to sign such an order after some of his supporters, including right-wing activist Laura Loomer, had expressed frustration about the lack of action against the Muslim Brotherhood.</em></p>



<p>Back in July, <em>The Daily Caller</em> reported that Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) was investigating whether CAIR was linked to any terrorist activities that would make it illegal for it to receive any public funding inside the United States. While Democrats have heavily favored CAIR for many years, even allowing it to receive public funds in California, the Biden administration in late 2023 claimed severing ties with the organization after a key executive of CAIR was found celebrating the October 7 terror attack of Hamas operatives on Israel.</p>



<p>While some Republican lawmakers have called for probing CAIR for potential links to Hamas or other Islamist terror groups, the DOJ has largely avoided such scrutiny and it is not clear whether President Trump will also follow Governor Abbott’s move to designate CAIR a terrorist organization. Staunch conservative Valentina Gomez of Texas, meanwhile, is warning that CAIR has a bounty on her head and if anything happened to her, CAIR is to be held responsible.</p>
