Among the endless challenges Joe Biden will face as America’s 46th president is the large migrant caravan heading north towards our southern border.
As many as 9,000 Honduran migrants have crossed into Guatemala in recent days. They also plan to walk all the way to the United States. The image above, captured on Sunday, shows a horde of migrants clashing with Guatemalan law enforcement. Officers responded to the group with tear gas after the migrants attacked them with rocks and other projectiles.
Pueblos Sin Fronteras (People Without Borders) is an immigration rights group that organizes migrant caravans in Central America.
It has called on the Biden Administration to “honor its commitments” to immigrants and asylum seekers.
“We recognize the importance of the incoming Government of the United States having shown a strong commitment to migrants and asylum seekers, which presents an opportunity for the governments of Mexico and Central America to develop policies and a migration management that respect and promote the human rights of the population in mobility,” said the group.
President Joe Biden has already announced plans to end construction of the Border Wall. He also plans to grant amnesty to 11 million illegal aliens, offer DACA recipients a pathway to citizenship, reverse Trump’s travel ban, overturn the Migrant Protection Protocols, and revoke Trump’s decision to exclude non-citizens from the census. But even he has admitted that things won’t change overnight.
The Mexican government claims it will not allow “illegal entry” to its country. In fact, it has already deployed 500 immigration officers to patrol its border with Guatemala. “We are making proposals to seek dialogue with the migrants,” said Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. “They should be taken care of so they do not enter any country by force.”
What is happening here is that migrants are surging towards the United States because they believe the Biden Administration will let them in. This influx, if allowed, is also guaranteed to exacerbate the pandemic.
“During the presidential debate, Joe Biden promised mass amnesty. The rest of the world noticed,” tweeted Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR). He also said, “He’s unveiling his draft immigration bill this week, and it’s what you’d expect from the party of open borders: Total amnesty, no regard for the health or security of Americans, and zero enforcement.”
