‘Love Letters’ between Trump and Kim Show Willingness to Work on Denuclearization

‘Love Letters’ between Trump and Kim Show Willingness to Work on Denuclearization

The denuclearization of North Korea is something the United States has been striving for since Pyongyang withdrew from the Nonproliferation Treaty in the early 2000’s. At no point were we closer to achieving this goal than during the Trump Administration.

President Donald Trump was one of few world leaders who were able (and willing) to work with someone like North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. During his presidency, Trump exchanged more than 20 letters with Kim and met him face-to-face three times.

Their friendly correspondence – famously described by Trump as “love letters” – shows that Kim was more than wiling to cooperate with the Trump Administration.

“I am ready to work with your excellency with all my heart and devotion,” wrote Kim in April of 2018.

Trump and Kim met in person for the first time two months later in Singapore, with the latter agreeing to repatriate the remains of 55 American soldiers killed in the Korean War (1950-1953).

“Thank you for keeping your promise to start the repatriation process of our soldiers,” wrote Trump. “I look forward to seeing you soon.”

Meeting Trump a second time would be “reminiscent of a scene from a fantasy film,” wrote Kim in another letter. “[The] deep and special friendship between us will work as a magical force.”

The relationship between the two leaders continued to blossom, with Kim wishing Trump a happy birthday in June of 2019:

“I am writing this letter to you as we are nearing the first anniversary of our meeting in Singapore…as well as to congratulate you on your birthday, which is just days away. I take it as a great honor to be able to send such a letter to Your Excellency.”

Though disheartened by the joint exercises conducted between the US and South Korea later that year, Kim continued to treat Trump with a level of respect never before seen from a man many have dismissed as crazy.

“Like the brief time we had together a year ago in Singapore, every minute we shared…in Hanoi was also a moment of glory that remains a precious memory,” continued Kim in the birthday note. “Such a precious memory that I have in my unwavering respect for you will provide impetus for me to take my steps when we walk toward each other again someday in the future.”

Kim goes on to highlight the two leaders’ “unique style” of communication that “nobody has ever tried” and expresses a hope that together they can “write a new history.”

“Today’s reality is that without a new approach and the courage it takes, the prospects for resolution of the issue will only be bleak,” concludes the letter. “I believe that one day will come sooner or later when we sit down together to make great things happen, with the will to give another chance to our mutual trust.”

Author’s Note: Trump’s ability to foster a relationship with Kim is one of the many reasons we miss him as president. Someone like Joe Biden would never be able to accomplish this feat. Click the CNN link below to view a full transcript of two of the letters.

Hindsight being 20/20, this story avoids the truth in order to prop up our Presidential puppet of dictators, Donald J. Trump.

While there were many flowery words which Alice believes are truth, the truth is actions speak louder than Alice’s platitudes and lies: https://www.armscontrol.org/factsheets/dprkchron

    No change in actions: https://www.brookings.edu/blog/order-from-chaos/2020/09/03/what-donald-trump-should-have-done-with-north-korea-and-what-the-next-president-should-do/

And so on and so on. Yes, the letters say nice things. The proof is in the pudding and there, NK made little changes in their pursuit of nuclear WMDs and the missile systems to carry them,

Do you trust the democrats, I for one DO NOT that answers a great deal of questions

    • Joseph S. Bruder

In other words, Kim flattered Trump, who was oblivious to the fact that Kim was still developing his arsenal of nuclear weapons. Trump got played!

      • Grace Bruno

He didn’t use them for 4 years though did he? And after watching what the U.S. did to Ghadaffi when he played ball I can’t blame Kim. Maybe he wants to live a few more years.

    • Grace Bruno

I didn’t blame Kim at all. If I were in his position I would be so afraid to denuclearize, look what happened to Ghadaffi and a few others. Trust the U.S. I think not.

    That’s a pair to draw to !
The 2 most outrageous, untrusting scumbags in political history want to put their heads together and we shiuld trust them ??? Ooooo kaaaay…

Yes, maybe we should send Biden. This way he can forget what side of Korea is on
    our side.
Biden is a Clown. Only Clowns vote for Clowns.

    • Chuck

      Better than a traitor insurrectionist

    • Tom

No need to send Biden and risk losing him yet. Kamala already is confused and thinks we are partners with North Korea. Maybe she can teach Kim Jung Un to sing, “The Wheels on the Bus”! Then they can take out their nap mats and take a rest together. Oh how sweet it would be!

Trump only got along with those leaders that were megalomaniacs, racists and self-serving morons like himself

I like where Trump kept his 2020 salary, no more stinking charity.

And that’s his only charity from 2017-2019, he dropped all the rest. .

Then it turns out his businesses mostly failed, but Daddy’s businesses saved the day.

    Was anything the truth?

    • Mik

      The truth is Don’s enemy.

    • Tom

What ever happened to that Tim Tebow football helmet he purchased for $12,000 using Trump Foundation charity money. He had put it in Mar-a lago but then it was flagged as a tax violation. Did he put it on eBay or something?

  6. Frank stetson

    a. He filled it wit top secret documents 🙂

    b. He was forced by the court to sell it to cover his obligations.

    c He lied about it.

    d. all of the above

Answer; while c is the highest probability answer for any Trump question, the answer is b. However c is considered ok in that first he told the court he sold it and showed a receipt from Mike Lindell, but that turned out to be a bobblehead. Then he sold it to cover his fraud fund liabilities
    Jfgi.

Now we have a White House full of responsible adults who sell us out and lie. Keep bashing Trump while old “Honest Joe” and Company run this country into the ground for our Kids and Grand Kids! All you bleeding hearts should adopt a family at the border, pay for their food, clothing, and medical expenses on your dime . Apparently you have enough to go around!

  8. Mike F

Clearly Kim’s words were all BS designed to flatter a narcissist into getting trump to do what Kim wanted-and they worked. Trump gave Kim the respect he wanted-face to face meetings with the leader of the US. However, when push came to shove, trump was unable to give Kim what he wanted, and there was nothing accomplished-a fact that Alice conveniently overlooks…
