Billionaire Jeffrey Epstein was arrested Saturday in New York in relation to sex trafficking crimes committed between 2002 and 2005.
Attorneys claim Epstein ran a “network and operation” that allowed him to abuse dozens of underage girls.
Epstein allegedly paid the girls in cash for each “sexual encounter” and for recruiting other girls.
The former hedge fund manager had already been under scrutiny related to a secret plea deal that allowed him to spend just 13 months in prison after pleading guilty to sex trafficking in 2007.
Many suspect his connections to powerful figures including Bill Clinton, Kevin Spacey, Donald Trump, and British royalty allowed him to escape a life sentence. This time, he faces a maximum sentence of 45 years.
“It’s been a long time coming – it’s been too long coming,” says attorney David Boies. “It is an important step towards getting justice for the many victims of Mr. Epstein’s sex trafficking enterprise.”
Partisan media outlets have responded to Epstein’s arrest by trying to tie their opponents to the pedophile, but it is unclear which of Epstein’s friends were involved.
The primary suspect is Bill Clinton, who flew on Epstein’s private jet – dubbed the “Lolita Express” – 26 times during the period outlined in the indictment, many times without Secret Service.
“When you hang out with a guy who has a reputation like Jeffrey Epstein, multiple times, on private jets, on weekends, on trips, in places at least where it’s been reported not very good things happen, it would be good to know what our former president was doing,” said Reince Priebus.
Trump had already banned Epstein from his Mar-a-Lago resort after he discovered that Epstein had assaulted an underage girl at a club.
