Iran Ignores UN Resolution; Conducts Second Missile Test
This Sunday marked the second ballistic missile test conducted by Iran since the signing of UN Resolution 2231 – a rule that bans such tests for eight years.
Resolution 2231 went into effect on July 20th, 2015, just days after the controversial nuclear deal with Iran (JCPOA) was signed. As reported by Fox News, the launch is a potential violation of the UN resolution.
Iran is “called upon not to undertake any activity related to ballistic missiles designed to be capable of delivering nuclear weapons, including launches using such ballistic missile technology,” reads the resolution.
The Khorramshahr medium-range missile was launched from a well-known test side roughly 140 miles east of Tehran. It flew over 600 miles before exploding. Last December, Brigadier Gen. Hossein Dehqan said Iran would start production of the Khorramshahr missile.
Iran argues that the test did not violate the nuclear deal because the missile is not designed to carry a nuclear warhead.
President Trump spoke about the JCPOA with Saudi Arabia’s King Salman this Sunday, with both parties agreeing “on the importance of rigorously enforcing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran and of addressing Iran’s destabilizing regional activities,” reports the White House.
Sunday’s launch could be considered a “destabilizing regional activity.”
Vice President Mike Pence and Def. Sec. James Mattis met with King Abdullah of Jordan on Monday, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would discuss the Iran issue with Presdient Trump when the two of them meet in mid-February.
“Among the issues I will address [with Trump] is the need to renew the sanctions against Iran,” wrote Netanyahu on Monday. “Sanctions against the ballistic missiles, and other sanctions against the terror, and re-addressing the failed agreement on its nuclear capabilities…Iran’s aggression should not be ignored.”
In March, Iran test-fired a missile adorned with the words “Israel must be wiped out.”
Editor’s note: Secretary of State Kerry’s notion that Iran would give up its nuclear ambitions was foolish. Iran will continue its pursue its domination of the middle east and the destruction of Israel.
