Hungary's Border Fence Is Working

Ever since Hungary put up a border fence to close off the country from illegal migrants from Croatia last month, the number of illegals has fallen to only a dozen per day. Prior to the miracle fence, there were up to 10,000 migrants illegally entering Hungary daily.

According to Gyorgy Bakondi, the chief adviser for homeland security to prime minister Viktor Orban, the new daily numbers are well below those of the “peace time” days, before the migrant crisis started.

Bakondi appeared on a popular Hungarian evening television talk show this week to discussed the success of the fence. Only 12 illegals crossed the border into Hungary Monday, seven on Tuesday and four on Wednesday. He described these figures as “significantly small numbers” historically.

Although the miracle fence has been particularly effective, Bakondi stated that the country’s entire border policing strategy is the reason for the massive decrease in illegal visitors. He said the fence, manpower and immigration laws are the country’s “triple defense.”

Hungary took an aggressive stand against the migrant problem and in just a week the number of illegal migrants went from 6,353 a day to only 29.

Now other countries like Austria, which previously criticized Hungary’s approach heavily to the migrant problem, are following suit by building their own wall against Slovenia.

The Hungarian method with strict border controls is evidently working.

The former Australian prime minister just spoke at the Second Annual Margaret Thatcher Gala dinner in London about how important it is to have strong borders and it will “prevent a tide of humanity surging through Europe and quite possibly changing it forever.”

He argued that the influx of migrant is causing too much damage to European countries to let it continue.

“All countries that say ‘anyone who gets here can stay here’ are now in peril, given the scale of the population movements that are starting to be seen. There are tens, perhaps hundreds, of millions of people living in poverty and danger who might readily seek to enter a Western country if the opportunity is there,” said Abbott. “Who could blame them? Yet no country or continent can open its borders to all comers without fundamentally weakening itself. This is the risk countries of Europe now run through misguided altruism.”

Nonetheless, Hungary has demonstrated that there is a successful solution and other European countries are bound to duplicate this approach.
