How close Iran is to THE bomb is irrelevant

Those who oppose the United States engaging in the Israeli/Iran war argue that Iran is not close to producing deliverable nuclear weapons. Others claim they are very close.

What we do know for sure is that Iran has allowed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to inspect all atomic energy facilities. We also know that Iran has been enriching uranium to a higher grade than is necessary for domestic uses. Why? The reason seems obvious.

Those opposing an attack on Iran claim it would take years for them to produce deployable nuclear weapons. But that refers to sophisticated, technologically advanced weapons. They can produce low grade weapons – sometimes referred to as “dirty bombs” – in short order. To prevent that, we must stop Iran’s nuclear program completely, OR install a more responsible and civilized leadership.

Iran has pursued their desire to be a nuclear power for years. They speed up the process – or slow it down – according to the political situation of the moment. But … they never gave it up. And no matter what they say, it would be dangerous political malfeasance to trust anything they say based on their institutional hatred for Israel, the United States and virtually all of the western nations. Even “trust but verify” is no solution to their deceit.

Since 1979, Iran – under the leadership of Islamic extremists – has been an avowed enemy of the free world because of our politics, our religions and our lifestyles. We are Infidels who have no right live – and who must be exterminated. That may sound extreme, but that is what they say – and what they teach in their schools and mosques. That is not the philosophy of the vast majority of Muslim, but only the extremist faction – the sociopathic nutcases.

The decision to take down Iran is not merely to prevent it from obtaining nuclear weapons. It is to stop them from sponsoring and engaging in the type of terrorism they have been engaged in for almost half a century. Since 1979, they have been an existential threat to Israel, the United States and others. That has been manifest in thousands of terrorist attacks and assassinations – killing thousands of military personnel and civilians.

The civilized nations of the world have been derelict in dealing with the problem – preferring to treat Iran through normal diplomacy and accommodation. Previous presidential administrations were feckless in dealing with Iran. The Iran we have seen for 46 years is the result of President Carter’s decision to allow the fall of the Shah. Carter ineptly traded a friendly autocrat for extremely dangerous adversarial autocrats. I rank that as the greatest stain on his legacy.

President Obama had the most irresponsible and reckless policies. He tilted American foreign policy more toward the Palestinians and the greater Muslim world. He entered into a meaningless nuclear agreement and released billions of dollars for the ayatollahs to carry on and expand the network of proxy terrorist organizations.

Even those who lobby against American involvement concede that things would change if Iran were to attack United States personnel and assets. They seem to forget that Iran and its proxies have already attacked American assets and killed thousands of soldiers and civilians. And it is America’s legal tradition that there are no statutes of limitation for murder. We should not give Iran a pardon for its past.

Eliminating Iran’s ability to gain nuclear weapons is a byproduct of the more important goal – to put an end to Iran’s ability to terrorize. And there is only one way to do that. Those who are committed to terrorism must be removed from power … period.

This should have been the goal for decades. But there has never been a better time to do it than now. Iran is virtually defenseless. It has no more proxies to finance, arm and direct. It has little to no support among world nations – including most of the Arab world. Thanks to Israel, Iran is more vulnerable than ever. We should not lose this once-in-a-generation opportunity to truly put an end to state-sponsored terrorism.

In terms of regime change, I covered that in previous commentary – noting that we have had many more successes than the few less successful that the left dwells upon. Regime change can be successful if we follow the American model that worked so many times in the past.

I can understand Trump’s desire to prevent war – to save lives – but it only allows the folks in Tehran to rebuild their recourse and resume sponsoring terrorism against Israel, America and perceived infidels throughout the world.

Failing to end Iran’s terrorism will cost many lives in the future. You can count on it. Take out the regime in Tehran and you end Terrorism and end the Iranian nuclear program.

So, there ‘tis.

PB Editor:: Written before the American attack on Iran. I am sure Larry will have more to say about the decision to attack Iran, and what we can expect.)
