HORIST: Weeks of one-sided testimony and biased reporting have not changed public opinion.
Prior to the start of the impeachment inquiry – secret and public– CNN polls indicated that approximately 50 percent of Americans favored impeachment – at least the inquiry – and 43 percent opposed. Considering the margin of error, that is close to a statistical tie.
Following Congressman Adam Schiff’s highly biased hearings – and the enormous one-sided reporting by the anti-Trump media — the CNN poll now indicates that 50 percent of the respondents favor impeachment and 43 percent opposed. The needle did not move.
Other polls suggest a modest decrease in public support for impeachment. The Quinnipiac poll showed a three percent drop in support for impeachment from October to November – from 48 percent to 45 percent. Other polls showed slight increases in President Trump’s favorability rating coming out of the Impeachment Inquiry.
That is a huge defeat for the Democrats hell-bent on impeaching the m*****f****r. So, if nothing changed very much, why would it be a defeat for the democrats? Allow me to explain.
First of all, Democrats promised that the Impeachment Inquire would “educate” the public on the misdeeds of President Trump. Once we the people actually hear the testimony, we would be convinced. That is what they said about the Mueller report, too. Once that report was issued, we would be persuaded that Trump is a reprobate of the worst kind.
When that did not happen, Democrats rationalized that the public was not reading the Report – even – though every salient detail was reported over and over and over by the anti-Trump news media. The next theory was that we stupid people would finally get the point once it was verbalized by Special Counsel Robert Mueller in congressional testimony.
When that didn’t happen, Democrats began searching for a new way to convince the public that Trump needed to go. In utter political desperation, they latched on to Trump’s temporary withholding of military aid to Ukraine until he was convinced that our money would not wind up in the foreign bank accounts of a bunch of corrupt oligarchs.
Schiff provided a forum in which bureaucrats testified that the President’s actions were “irregular,” “unprecedented” and “unusual.” Quite simply, that meant that the President’s method of doing business was not according to how the bureaucracy is used to doing business. In their topsy-turvy world, the bureaucrats set the policy and the elected officials carry it out. Anything else is “irregular,” “unprecedented” and “unusual.”
Throughout the secret testimony – with its selectively leaked information – and the eventual public testimony, Democrats enjoyed the patronage of the east coast liberal news media. According to the folks in the Fourth Estate, every witness was a courageous and noble individual – patriotic and without partisan political leanings. (Pardon me while I attempt to control my mocking laughter.)
During this entire time. CNN, MSNBC, the New York Times and the Washington Post (and others) set aside the standards and ethics of journalism to become part of Schiff’s prosecution team. CNN ran retrospectives of the Nixon impeachment hearings in an obvious attempt to malign Republican with a guilt by association scam. Interesting, they did not expend a lot of network time and resources drawing attention to the Clinton impeachment.
The anti-Trump networks featured panels of pundits who were universally anti-Trump – interpreting, hyping and spinning every bit of testimony as a smoking gun against the President – while ignoring every exculpating statement. They gave enormous airtime to virtually every Democrat presidential candidate willing to sell the narrative that Trump committed all sorts of crimes – and they all eagerly did.
The left-wing networks created so-called town hall meetings – giving Democrat candidates with less than five percent of the vote hours of airtime to bash Trump. These were nothing less than political infomercials.
The anti-Trump, anti-Republican and anti-conservative networks produced hours of “specials” with such subjects as impeachment in the words of the witnesses – yet another regurgitation of the staged inquiry – the lies of President Trump and the White House in chaos. Every one of these was propaganda parading as news and documentaries.
Our eyes and ears were literally flooded with those hours of airtime and miles of newsprint with variations on a theme by propagandists. And what happened to public opinion after this unprecedented biased media pounding? Nothing. The Democrats had scorch-bombed the political earth and failed to hit their target. That is amazing.
Democrats set up this process to have a LOT of bites at the same apple – and we are about to be entertained to another. This time it is an impeachment “hearing” to be conducted by the House Judiciary Committee under the stridently partisan leadership of New York Congressman Jerry Nadler.
For the most part, it will be yet ANOTHER repetition of all the old statements that had failed to move the needle. Of course, they will hype endless “new revelations” that will only be some other person saying what has been already been said and is well known to the public. That is how Democrats are working the impeachment issue – presenting us with the same old stuff in a new box.
Democrats know that the Nadler effort may be their last chance. They will have run out of new boxes. They will have to impeach or not impeach — and in the former case, kick the issue over to the Republican-controlled Senate.
It should be noted that we are not done with Schiff’s folderol. His committee will continue its inquiries, hoping to find even more “evidence” to kick over to the Judiciary Committee and ultimately, the Senate. Yes, it is true. Schiff will still be popping up in front of the cameras to yet again claim to be the possessor of “conclusive evidence” against Trump – evidence that is not likely to be conclusive at all.
More than three years of Democrat accusations, multi-million dollar investigations and mendacious media attacks – and so far … ????
So, there ‘tis.
