Groundhog Day over at MSNBC

The first thing I do in the morning is turn on the news. I generally start with MSNBC.

For a moment, I had to wonder if I had slipped back in time – but then I recalled that it was MSNBC. That network seems to be stuck in Groundhog Day-type reporting in which nothing new happened since January 6, 2021.

I was listening to another of Joe Scarborough’s rants. It had the aura of familiarity. He was going over a litany of President Trump’s pugnacious statements – telling folks to beat up protestors, cops to get rough, etc., etc., etc. It was all about big bad Trump – and nothing we had not heard before.

Scarborough ranted on about how Trump had caused the GOP to lose in 2018, the Georgia Senate seats, and the 2020 election.

I can understand why a left-wing show host would offer those perspectives – BUT again and again and again and again and again? That has been the daily offering of MSNBC –along with the clips of the riot on Capitol Hill. Like the Democrats, the left wants to talk about nothing but Trump and the 2020 election.

When they brought up the threadbare election denier narrative, they shifted over to … (Was I still lost in a dream?) … Chris Mathews. Who? This is a guy who was once a major personality on NBC and MSNBC. He had his own show, was a panelist on other shows, and was always part of the election night reporting team. But that was years ago.

Mathews’s last notable appearance was election night in 2016. He was visibly stunned and bewildered as their election guru, Steven Kornacki, suggested that Hillary Clinton did not have enough votes in those final states to overcome Trump’s lead. Mathews virtually begged Kornacki to give him some hope in the numbers. Shortly thereafter, Mathews received his walking papers from MSNBC – and has been mostly out of sight ever since.

For reasons known only to the management of MSNBC, it was decided to bring old Mathews back as a regular panelist.

At this time of the year, we are approaching the “Fall back” clock change. With MSNBC’s persistent Trump-dump news policy – combined with the re-emergence of Mathews – I had the feeling that we had turned back the hands of time by more than five years.

When you fully appreciate how MSNBC obsessively focuses on old stories, you can understand why a number of my very liberal Democrat friends are dropping the network from their viewing schedule. And why those who remain loyal to MSNBC are so ill-informed on the other side of the issues – or even a lot of news you find on the other networks?

Considering all the extreme negative things MSNBC has to say about Republicans and conservatives, you can understand why it is that their viewers are always so stunned when Republicans win elections.

So, there tis.
