
<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna of Florida has introduced a bill in the Congress that would repeal The Patriot Act and, in her words, “strip rogue intelligence officers of their extraordinary mass surveillance powers.”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Luna introduced the bill H.R.3245, titled “American Privacy Restoration Act,” in the House on May 7. A press release issued by her office stated:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><em>Since being enacted, there have been numerous whistleblower reports of rampant abuse of Patriot Act powers by U.S. intelligence agencies.</em></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Passed and enforced by the George W. Bush administration in 2001, shortly after the 9/11 attacks on America, the USA Patriot Act gives great surveillance power to the federal government, something that the American intelligence agencies have been accused of abusing to spy on Americans in unprecedented ways. Concerns over violation of the right to privacy and surveillance for political victimization subsequently plagued the nation that felt that the new surveillance powers were an opportunity the government fished out of a disaster to use for expanding its own political power at the cost of civil rights.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since Congresswoman Luna posted on X about her American Privacy Restoration Act, conservatives have widely supported it. Luna’s X post has received close to 2 million views and thousands of comments in support. “End the Patriot act” became the rallying cry of conservatives and libertarians on social media after her post.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Actor Rob Schneider, a former Democrat who left the Democratic Party during Obama’s second term over the party’s failed and destructive policies, voiced his support for Congresswoman Luna’s bill. Using call caps, he posted on X: “THE PATRIOT ACT has MADE EVERY AMERICAN a TERRORIST SUBJECT for 25 YEARS! ENOUGH!”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Previously, Republican Congressman Greg Steube of Florida also tried to move the Congress in June 2023 to repeal The Patriot Act. However his bill died in the Congress as it was not brought up for a vote. Whether Congresswoman Luna’s bill will gather enough support in the House and Senate to rob the deep state of their spying powers is therefore the next big question in this issue. <em>Blaze News</em> commentators discussed it on Jill Savage’s recent show.</p>
