Federal Government Spends $138,000 on Gender Identity Research

children&&num;8217&semi;s gendered behavior &lpar;e&period;g&period;&comma; preferences for gender-typed toys&rpar; and measures of related gender cognition &lpar;e&period;g&period;&comma; memory for gender-consistent vs&period; inconsistent behaviors&rpar;&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"MsoNormal">The National Science Foundation &lpar;NSF&rpar; gave the researchers &dollar;138&comma;000 for the study&comma; where 250 children aged 4 to 6&comma; along with their parents&comma; are being questioned on &ldquo&semi;gendered behavior&period;&rdquo&semi;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"MsoNormal">&&num;8220&semi;Prominent theories of gender development have discussed the degree to which gender identity results from an internal sense of gender and socialization processes&comma;&&num;8221&semi; writes the National Science Foundation&period; &&num;8220&semi;However&comma; tests of these theories have been limited because&comma; for most children&comma; internal gender identity and environmental socialization substantially overlap&comma; rendering it impossible to distinguish the relative impact of each factor on gender development&period;&&num;8221&semi;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"MsoNormal">NSF was created in 1950 by Congress with the mission &&num;8220&semi;to promote the progress of science&semi; to advance the national health&comma; prosperity&comma; and welfare&period;&rdquo&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"MsoNormal">The University of Washington&rsquo&semi;s study is anticipated to finish in 2019 and the NSF offered funding stating that it&rsquo&semi;s &&num;8220&semi;a critical test of extant theory by examining gender development among children with atypical patterns of gender development&rdquo&semi; and that &&num;8220&semi;specifically&comma; this grant supports the investigation of whether established theories &lpar;e&period;g&period;&comma; social learning theory&comma; social cognitive theory&comma; gender schema theory&rpar; can account for a wider range of human gender experiences&period;&rdquo&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"MsoNormal">However&comma; there have been countless studies done exposing the negative mental and physical effects of sex-change surgeries&period; &nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"MsoNormal">Not to mention&comma; the American College of Pediatricians &lpar;ACPeds&comma;&rpar; a group of the country&rsquo&semi;s leading medical experts&comma; has made a statement condemning these procedures at an early age&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"MsoNormal">&ldquo&semi;Conditioning children into believing a lifetime of chemical and surgical impersonation of the opposite sex is normal and healthful is child abuse&comma;&rdquo&semi; according to the ACPeds&period;&nbsp&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"MsoNormal">Two of the leading researchers of the study also work for the &ldquo&semi;TransYouth Project&comma;&rdquo&semi; which &ldquo&semi;aims to help sci&shy&semi;en&shy&semi;tists&comma; edu&shy&semi;ca&shy&semi;tors&comma; par&shy&semi;ents&comma; and chil&shy&semi;dren bet&shy&semi;ter under&shy&semi;stand the vari&shy&semi;eties of human gen&shy&semi;der devel&shy&semi;op&shy&semi;ment&period;&rdquo&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p class&equals;"MsoNormal">&ldquo&semi;In addition to our primary goal of supporting the first major study of transgender children in the U&period;S&period;&comma;
