FBI agents are asking the Senate Judiciary Committee to view unredacted documents they received from abortion providers during an investigation into the alleged sale of fetal tissue and baby body parts. The request could mean the FBI is gearing up to launch an official criminal investigation.
While investigations into Planned Parenthood’s dubious practices have taken place in the House, the Senate, and across 13 states, a criminal investigation by the FBI would mark a new chapter in the scandal that began in 2015 when the Center for Medical Progress released a series of undercover videos.
An FBI investigation is “long overdue,” argues CMP founder David Daleiden. The “sale of aborted baby body parts is the greatest human atrocity of our times and must finally be brought to justice under the law.”
According to Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who led the Senate probe, the information gathered by lawmakers at the time was more than enough to prove that Planned Parenthood was engaged in the practice of selling fetal tissue for use in research.
Federal law bans the sale of fetal tissue for profit, but abortion providers are allowed to price fetal tissue for research in order to make up for the costs of obtaining it. Planned Parenthood has been accused of overpricing body parts to make a profit.
“The report documents the failure of the Department of Justice, across multiple administrations, to enforce the law that bans the buying and selling of human fetal tissue,” wrote Grassley last December, when he referred several abortion providers for criminal investigation. Grassley says he will comply with the FBI’s document request.
Meanwhile, Planned Parenthood continues to insist that it has done nothing wrong.
Planned Parenthood’s VP of Government Affairs, Dana Singiser, insists that the “accusations are baseless” and considers them no more than a “widely discredited” scheme by Republican lawmakers to “to end access to reproductive health care at Planned Parenthood.” The abortion provider “has never, and would never, profit while facilitating its patients’ choice to donate fetal tissue for use in important medical research.”
Pro-life activists are hopeful that a criminal investigation will be launched soon.
“Not content with their status as the nation’s largest abortion business, evidence shows Planned Parenthood sought to squeeze every last opportunity for cash from the sale of hearts, brains, lungs, and livers of the unborn children whose lives they end,” says Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List.
“Planned Parenthood and its associates are terrified of having their sordid business model exposed. We commend the Trump administration for holding them accountable and urge Congress to follow through on the promise to redirect the half-billion dollars in taxpayer funding the abortion giant receives each year.”
