Liberals have been working committedly for many years now to legalize suicide for people who are in pain or distress and want to end their suffering. The dangerous slippery slope landing one in grave is being abused in leftist-run countries like Canada where ad campaigns have been running to convince people that death is good for you long as your doctor is onboard. And liberals in Ohio and Michigan are unsurprisingly on the same page.

Last month, Democrats in Michigan’s State House introduced a set of four bills – HB 5825 through HB 5828 – to legalize medical assistance in suicide by terminally ill patients. The Democrats have named their legislation the “Dying with Dignity Act.” As reported on the pro-life website Live Action (May 15), the proposed legislation seeks to allow medical professionals to help eligible patients end their lives with lethal drugs.

For the patients to be eligible for requesting such assistance from the doctors, they need to have a terminal diagnosis with a life expectancy of six months or less; they have to be adult (18 or older); and be mentally capable of making medical decisions. The proposed law also offers protection to professionals participating in assisted suicide from criminal investigation and prosecution provided that they abide by the laws. In addition, the health insurance providers will be prohibited from reducing or refusing coverage of procedures involved in the assisted suicide cases.

The Michigan legislation was quickly followed by a nearly identical bill in Ohio, also introduced by Democrats in the State House under the name “Ohio Medical Aid in Dying (MAID)” Act. LifeSite News (April 28) reported that the proposed legislation requires two doctors to sign off on oral and written requests by the terminally ill patients for the prescription of lethal pills to be filled.

Liberals have already legalized medically assisted suicide in blue states like Oregon, California, Washington, and Colorado. Michigan and Ohio are next on their list though the State House in both states has a Republican majority; and Republicans are generally opposed to assisted suicide on moral grounds. Ohio has a wide majority of Republicans in the State House while Michigan’s Republican majority is rather slim (58–52).

In opposition to the liberal push for assisted suicide, Live Action wrote:

A genuinely compassionate society does not address pain with poison; it tackles illnesses and suffering with hospice, palliative medicine, presence, and protection for some of the most vulnerable members of society.
