This past week a political quake of high magnitude on the impact scale shook the Trump administration as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center Joe Kent resigned from his office. What made Kent’s resignation a political storm for President Trump and his team is the reason for which the counterterrorism chief quit his job – his opposition to the war on Iran.

In his resignation letter, shared with the public via his X account on March 17, Kent wrote:

I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this war due to pressure from Israel and its powerful American lobby.

After much reflection, I have decided to resign from my position as Director of the National Counterterrorism Center, effective today.

I cannot in good conscience support the ongoing war in Iran. Iran posed no imminent threat to our nation, and it is clear that we started this… pic.twitter.com/prtu86DpEr
— Joe Kent (@joekent16jan19) March 17, 2026

This statement was a direct blow to Trump’s leadership on the current war against Iran that the US-Israeli alliance started three weeks ago. President Trump has repeatedly claimed that Iran was making nukes and thus posed an imminent threat to the national security of America while a segment of conservatives have challenged these claims and asked for evidence to back it up.

Kent, the highest official in Trump’s DNI dealing directly with national security threats, is supposed to be the authority on who and/or what poses an imminent threat to America. Him openly contradicting Trump’s position amounts to calling Trump a liar or at least ignorant of the reality of Iran’s status.

But it gets even worse with the second part of Kent’s statement, namely that America’s war in Iran that has until now left at least a dozen Americans killed and the gas prices around the world soar was only launched because Israel wanted it – a view many conservative critical thinkers have maintained since before the war started. Trump, on the other hand, has denied it and insisted that Iran is under attack because it poses a threat to America regardless of Israel.

It was hardly a surprise that Trump, when asked about Kent’s resignation, trashed the now ex-counterterrorism chief that he appointed to the office. The President called Kent “very weak on security,” a comment that a lot of conservatives disagreed with and questioned Trump’s judgment.

Let me get this straight…I’m to believe that the highly decorated Army Ranger Joe Kent…who President Trump himself nominated to be Director of the National Counterterrorism Center…is “weak” on security?

I’m not buying it.

Trump is losing everyone. pic.twitter.com/7fXz5Oqud9
— Eric Spracklen ðºð¸ (@EricSpracklen) March 17, 2026

On March 19, Kent received cheers and a standing ovation at the Catholic Prayer for America event indicating the support he is getting among the conservatives opposed to the war. Earlier that day Kent sat down with Tucker Carlson to share his views and insights into the issues surrounding his resignation.

There’s no doubt that Kent’s resignation and speaking out against the Trump administration’s launch of war on Iran has deepened the rift within the MAGA movement and dealt a heavy blow to the current government’s promises of America-First policies.
