Bob Menendez is a name synonymous to corruption powerhouse in American politics. The Democrat Senator from New Jersey was sentenced to 11 years in prison earlier this year over his many schemes of corruption, some of them involving bribes from foreign governments. And he wasn’t alone in these crimes. His better half was part of it for years and she has now been sentenced to prison as well.

Nadine Menendez, the second wife of Senator Menendez, was sentenced on Thursday (September 11) to four-and-a-half years in prison for using her husband’s influence to get bribes in form of cash, gold bars, and a luxury car. As reported by the Associated Press, 58-year-old Nadine Menendez was convicted in April this year for colluding with her husband from 2018 to 2023 in his corruption schemes some of which involved the Egyptian government. She was cited telling the judge who sentenced her:

“I put my life in his hands and he strung me like a puppet. The blindfold is off. I now know he’s not my savior. He’s not the man I thought he was.”

The story noted that Mrs. Menendez doesn’t have to report to the prison until July next year as she is allowed ample time to “complete necessary medical procedures” before turning herself in for serving time behind bars. While Nadine Menendez blamed her husband for making her do what she did, she told media outside the courthouse that she has no plans for divorcing the former senator. Her attorney said that Mrs. Menendez would be appealing the sentence as she can’t spend more than a year in prison due to her illness – brain injury, longstanding trauma, and difficult recovery from breast cancer. ;

Prosecutors disagreed with this assessment and wanted Mrs. Menendez to serve at least seven years.

Earlier this month, the office of the Mayor of Newark made news as the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the guilty plea by a senior aid to the Mayor. The DOJ press release stated:

Al-Tarik Onque, 49, of East Orange, New Jersey pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge William J. Martini to an Information charging him with conspiracy to commit honest services fraud. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, a Democrat, himself was arrested in May this year for confronting immigration agents at a detention facility where illegal aliens captured for removal from the country were being held.
