Hate or Hoax? Gay Pastor Sues Whole Foods for Cake Message

Texas pastor Jordan Brown is suing Whole Foods grocery store for “emotional damage.” The openly gay pastor ordered a custom cake from the Whole Foods bakery, requesting that it say “Love Wins” in icing. The cake he received on April 14th said “Love Wins FAG.” 

And here is where the story gets fishy. As you can see from the photo above, the offensive word is easy to see. There’s no way Brown would not have noticed. 

Instead of confronting the bakery then and there, however, he was apparently halfway home before he noticed the anti-gay slur. Brown says that he called the store and spoke with an “extremely apologetic” employee. The store called back two hours later and told him they could not do anything about the incident. Infuriated, Brown posted a video to social media showing the sealed, unopened box containing the offensive pastry. 

Whole Foods claims the whole thing is a hoax. The store has a zero-tolerance policy for discrimination and denies the offending word was added by anyone working for the store. “Our team member wrote “Love Wins” at the top of the cake as requested by the guest, and that’s exactly how the cake was packaged and sold at the store,” reads a statement released by the store.

“We stand behind our bakery team member, who is part of the LGBTQ community, and the additional team members from the store, who confirmed the cake was decorated with only the message “Love Wins.” 

“I’ve had to face years of discrimination and judgment for something th I had no control over,” complained Brown in an interview. He says that he is a huge fan of the grocery store, but is still demanding a trial. Brown even went so far as to throw a dash of racism into the story by claiming the bakery employee responsible for the slur was a white Caucasian. 

My question is that if he saw the woman who wrote on the cake – why didn’t he see what she wrote? 

“As a pastor, I forgive her. I’m praying for her that she would have a change of heart,” Brown told a local news station. “If we don’t take a stand for what is right, these things will continue to happen.”

Whole Foods maintains the story is a fake and has decided to counter-sue. We are inclined to agree.
