GOP Voters Support Trump on Immigration
According to an Economist Group/YouGov survey of GOP and right-leaning independent voters, an overwhelming number support Donald Trump as the best man to handle the issue of immigration. Trump receive 49% of the support, in second place was the “not sure” catergoy at 13%, and Marco Rubio received the third greatest support at 10%.
Trump’s position has been controversial but consistent. In a nutshell: build the border wall (make Mexico pay for it), enforce our existing laws (throw illegals out, defund sanctuary cities) and make our immigration policy serve the U.S. by requiring Americans be hired first.
The most controversial part of Trump’s immigration plan has been the stated goal to deport 11 million illegal immigrants currently in America.
This would be a massive undertaking and other candidates believe would lead to a horrendous abuse of human rights, ripping families apart and rounding up illegal in holding pens.
But would this be the case? According to a Trump’s website, “In 2011, the Government Accountability Office found that there were a shocking 3 million arrests attached to the incarcerated alien population, including tens of thousands of violent beatings, rapes and murders.” Looking at 3 million arrests, would it be much of a stretch to continue one step further and process them for deportation?
Trump’s style has always been to make controversial statements, and then double down when challenged. The immigration issue has been the rule rather than the exception.
But the more confidence Trump expresses in this idea, the more mainstream USA starts to look for solutions to this problem and accept it as possible. While most politicians see the potential horror of Japanese internment camps or Auschwitz style treatment of illegals, perhaps with Trump’s inspiration, some of the great and bureaucratic minds can find a way to begin this process and make a dent in illegal immigration.
In my own view, the solution is to build the wall and control the border. Period. Once this is accomplished and the flow of illegals is slowed dramatically or stopped, the problem of illegal immigrants in America takes on a completely new dynamic. Once this happens, we can solve the problem without the crisis mentality that currently exists.
