Is Greenland in Play? A Push for Independence and Trump’s Renewed Interest

Greenland, the world’s largest island and an autonomous territory of Denmark, has once again found itself at the center of geopolitical intrigue. Prime Minister Múte Egede recently declared his intent to accelerate Greenland’s path to independence, framing it as a necessary step toward self-determination and economic sovereignty. However, beneath his firm rhetoric lies a growing question: Is Egede preparing to align with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in a potential deal to integrate Greenland into the United States?

Trump’s Greenland Ambitions: A Strategic Proposal Revisited

President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly expressed interest in purchasing Greenland from Denmark, a proposal that sparked both international debate and diplomatic tension. While the idea might seem outlandish to some, Trump’s insistence raises important questions about Greenland’s geopolitical significance, economic potential, and the broader implications of such a deal.

Why Greenland Matters: Strategic and Resource Significance

Greenland’s strategic importance cannot be overstated. As Arctic ice melts, new shipping routes are opening, and the region’s vast reserves of rare earth minerals, uranium, zinc, copper, and iron ore are becoming increasingly accessible. The United States already operates the Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) in Greenland, a critical military installation monitoring threats from Russia and China.

Former National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien emphasized Greenland’s value, calling it a “highway from the Arctic all the way to North America.” With increasing Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic, Greenland is seen as a key geopolitical asset.

Greenland’s Hidden Wealth and Sovereignty Concerns

Greenland is home to vast untapped mineral wealth. Aaja Chemnitz, a member of Greenland’s Parliament, highlighted the island’s resource potential, stating, “We have almost any kind of rare earth minerals that the U.S., but also EU, is looking for. However, any development must respect Greenlandic sovereignty.”

Chemnitz made it clear: “Greenland has never been for sale. Greenland will never be for sale. And it’s quite clear. We would like to have U.S. engagement and collaboration, but Greenland’s future must remain in our hands.”

Supporters vs. Opponents of Trump’s Plan

Supporters:

  • Robert O’Brien: Denmark lacks the military capacity to defend Greenland from Russian and Chinese threats.
  • Republican Strategists: U.S. ownership of Greenland would secure critical minerals and Arctic dominance.
  • Trump Transition Team: Trump’s allies argue that such a deal would ensure American security and resource independence.

Opponents:

  • Prime Minister Múte Egede: “Greenland will never be for sale. Our sovereignty is non-negotiable.”
  • Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen: Called the proposal “absurd” and diplomatically insensitive.
  • Greenlandic Parliament Member Aaja Chemnitz: Insists Greenland’s future must remain under the authority of its people.

Historical Context: Not the First Time

The idea of purchasing Greenland isn’t new. In 1946, President Harry Truman offered Denmark $100 million for the island, but the offer was declined. Similarly, in 1867, the U.S. considered acquiring Greenland alongside Alaska.

Trump and his supporters argue that purchasing Greenland would mirror historic acquisitions like the Louisiana Purchase (1803), Alaska Purchase (1867), and U.S. Virgin Islands (1917).

The Economic Question: What’s Greenland Worth?

While Truman’s 1946 offer equates to roughly $1.4 billion today, Greenland’s immense mineral reserves and strategic location mean its valuation could easily reach tens or hundreds of billions of dollars.

Economist Iwan Morgan noted, “The United States bought Alaska for peanuts in 1867—about $125 million in today’s money. Greenland would be far more expensive.”

PBP Editor: Trump is already sending reps to Greenland and the word is that they were welcomed. If Trump were to offer, say, $5 million to each citizen, it would be cheap enough for the U.S. and would probably sway the vote.

Why is Greenland an island and Australia a continent? Isn’t North/South America an island? Why is Asia one continent and Europe another? Is Africa an island?

Just another shiny bobble to distract us from Trump’s promises like ending the Ukraine war before inauguration and the mass deportations shortly thereafter and dropping gas prices dramatically shortly after that.

Got to laugh how weaponizing climate change for land grabs is American now. Used to be Russian……

        Thanks Robert, I will.

But I did not read that Seward said “I do not rule out military force “ or suggest that Russia had no rights to their claim. If I read correctly, Russia offered the sale during its difficulties in the Crimean war.

Like I said, just our distraction of the day as we weave our weird way forward with the Mump Regine and it’s elder statesman who is our Felon Sexual Abusing Defamer of women King.

Buying it is one thing. Braggadocio is unpresidential

Russia was almost broke, and saw no real economic benefit to keeping Alaska at the time. They offered (even thou their claim was suspect) and we bought.
Better we offer to make Greenland a state !

TRUMP is reverting to old fashioned Imperialism practiced by kings and queens 500 years ago. He is jealous of the former Imperialistic ways of Japan, China, Great Britain, France, Spain, The Netherlands, and a host of other nation states who claimed island nations as possessions and annexed the land. Most were gained by treaty after some war or were conquered out right.
Trump’s land grab is more about his expansionist desires the mesh with his Trump Enterprise taking over more real estate. With his Greenland deal he does not need loans from banks. He has the backing of the U.S. economy and this deal won’t send him into bankruptcy. It’s his greatest real estate mogul fantasy come true
Possibly he will negotiate a deal by trading A few of America’s Island Territories for Greenland. He thinks Porto Rico would be worth trading for Greenland.
Does Trump intend to steamroll Greenland’s government into accepting U.S. Territory status? If Greenland separated from Denmark would it capitulate to Trump’s demands.
I hope Congress will not buy into Trumps’s pushing this as a militarily strategic must have for national security importance.
This is just another of Trump’s bait and switch promotions that he invents to turn attention away from his legal conundrums and his campaign lies coming back to roost even before the 20th of this month.
This Congress will tell if the party of Trump (Musk) has any guts political or otherwise in the fight against inflation, income tax inequality, national debt increases and its interest payments effects on the U.S. Economy.
Trump campaigned on the claim that he alone is the one who will stop Russia’s war on Ukraine, turn price inflation around, solve the cause of Wild Fires in US Western States, particularly California, and blast hurricanes with nukes.
Trumps main defense and reasoning behind his great schemes is that old devil, National Security.
He has found that whenever he connects an idea that will negatively affect National Security or a policy of his that will increase and ensure National Security, he knows he will have his supporter’s ears and pocketbooks.
Trump is fond of saying, ” few people know this” or “nobody knew about this” and many other beginning phrases he uses after he found out about something he believes no one else has found, discovered, or put together in their minds as clearly as he has.
That everyone except him, possibly, has known all about what he is thinking is new and ground breaking discovery, that truly escapes him every time.
Why is it he thinks that purchasing Greenland is uniquely his brainstorm and therefore logical in every regard?
This has many more down sides long term that disqualifies its seemingly immediate positive military and natural resource returns on investment.
No other way it can be said but that the Greenland purchase is unprecedented folly and imprudent US foreign policy. But, such a deal is who Trump is and that’s a truth. Trump the artful dodger dealer.

Jesus Frank, why don’t you wait and see if Trump’s promises come true before slandering him all the time – before his promises comes to fruition? Looks like you want total tyranny all over this planet. Why? Is Earth so bad? IF you don’t like it here, go to Mars or another planet and stop with the stupid stuff! Your rants are getting old.

Tom, or should I say not-independent-Tom: again. I worked at a mid level manager, upper mid really, for a very capitalistic fortune 100 company versus your POS job. I was able to retire at 56 to be with kids, and since then invest for a living capitalistically cleaning your clock when it comes to income. I am pure capitalist in my investments: I have no green agenda, no political agenda, except the almighty green, the dollar. Very capitalist. The difference is that I do it from my couch and you struggle for the man. Seems to me that you are more commie peasant than I and that I am reaping the benefits of being a capitalist.

What’s in your wallet to out capitalist me? I am betting you got nothing. Hot air. Big time.

Many of trumps supporters may say that all his recent bullshit is just trump running off at the mouth (which he does regularly). However, each of his recent tirades (regarding Greenland, Canada, Panama Canal and Gulf of Mexico) disparages people who are considered our Allie’s. It’s going to be a rough four years with this fool back in the Oval Office…

THIS “FOOL” AS YOU PUT IT, IS FAR MORE QUALIFIED THAN THE ENTIRE HOUSE AND SENATE PUT TOGETHER! Trump has done more, accomplished more, in his private life and as a past president, have you ever actually took time out of your leftist socialist life and researched for yourself what Trump has done in his lifetime, both in America and around the entire world in business and politics??? “You are a willfully ignorant individual, Biden and the liberal socialist democrats were a “TRAIN WRECK” for America the past 4 years. The liberal socialist agenda (policies) by mixing some truths, making it so deceptive, then comes the absolute garabage that destroys the truth by using the liberal socialist media that spreads their propaganda. Their doctrine is nothing more than a can of worms and the gullible public swallows it without adequate evidence. The liberal socialist democrats are not about truths and facts, there about what they can get people to believe. The liberals are full of hypocrites, they look and sound good, they can cause the masses to come under their hypnotic control. But, they are leading American democracy to destruction, with their lies, misinformation, Deception, and false promises. The liberals depend on your gullibility, the democrats are no longer a political party, they have become a “CULT” anyone who disagrees with them, they want to eliminate by any means necessary, very much like the mobs and gangsters of the 1920’s. “Some Americans will never appreciate America, until after they have helped destroy it, and have then begun to suffer the consequences” THOMAS SOWELL “American freedoms are no more than one generation away from extinction”. Every Traitor selling military secrets to foreign countries fells he is practicing Capitalism
    at its finest!
The fact is making money at the cost of some else is NOT the same as the market
or even gambling as one knows the risks and puts up their money for investment.
Every time someone SHORTS the American public, they are going against America and
    not American Business!
Biden Shorted America at every turn with no desire or any intention to help

Oh Trump is making money off you. No doubt on that. Good that you appreciate a good grift if from “your guy.”

I just didn’t think Presidents should profit from position.

Biden has not or at least that one can see or prove. You’ve been trying to catch him now for over four years, using the entire might of congressional oversight and investigation, both Comer and Jordan have come up with zip. That’s four years and millions of taxpayer dollars wasted. You’ve had some plugs for Fox stories, but you can’t get it to court. Apparently, Comer and Jordan are basically useless used rubbers.

Trump is a convicted felon. He has been convicted of rigging the system for 34 counts for Trump, and 34 counts for his fraudulent business. In the past, he is also defrauded his college students, had to shutter his university. He has defrauded his charity fund, had to close that down. And there we have facts as to what he paid out and others punishments for, his convictions, and soon, perhaps, the scotus is willing, his latest felonies. He is also held liable for sexual abuse, defamation, and in the judge’s rebuttal to his failed countersuit, has been put on the record as a digital rapist.

Salute away. Have your Brownshirt on when you do it.
