Report: In a Fight with China, the US Military Would Lose

Analysts and allies are growing concerned about America’s military capabilities in the Pacific.

In a report released Friday, researchers at the University of Sydney’s United States Studies Center claim Chinese forces could wipe out US forces in the Indo-Pacific region in a matter of hours.

The shocking report is in line with findings by the National Defense Strategy Commission, which in November 2018 warned lawmakers that the US military “might struggle to win or perhaps lose a war against China or Russia.”

In recent years, the Pentagon’s Indo-Pacific strategy has focused on limiting Chinese expansion and strengthening partnerships with allies – but it has not prepared us for a full-scale military attack.

Other factors contributing to our weakened position in the Pacific:

  • Continued military focus in Middle East
  • Budget cuts
  • Underinvestment in advanced military technology
  • China’s counter-intervention systems and investments in military tech

Making matters worse is the “outdated superpower mindset” in Washington as well as the “growing partisanship and ideological polarization” in Congress, explains the report.

Nearly all US military facilities in the Indo-Pacific region “could be rendered useless by precision strikes in the opening hours of a conflict.”

The Chinese military has upwards of 2,000 missiles and has built roughly 470 missile launchers since 2014.

“Asymmetries in power, time, distance, and interest would all work against an effective American response…Under present-day US posture in the region, most American and allied bases and forward-deployed ships, troops, and aircraft would struggle to survive a PLA salvo attack, and would be initially forced to focus on damage limitation rather than blunting the thrust of a Chinese offensive.”

The report comes amid increasing tension with China in relation to trade and the South China Sea.

Last week, Beijing condemned the Trump Administration’s $8 billion sale of fighter jets to Taiwan and accused members of Congress of exacerbating the protests in Hong Kong.

Despite a massive increase in defense spending, Chinese officials say they are following a “path of peaceful development” in the Pacific.

Editor’s note: Everyone knows that the Chinese goal is to be the greatest world power. They have managed to build an economy based on stealing U.S. intellectual property and developing a very cheap workforce, and they have invested massive quantities of those stolen dollars on military technology.

Yes, a surprise attack might indeed be devastating for the U.S.  Don’t count us out, we have overall more military strength than China and can certainly beat them. But China knows that incremental victories may be difficult and time consuming to push back, and that America’s political will to kick them back out might flag in the face of thousands of potential casualties.

The next WW will be fought on American Soil. Our political leaders since WWII have forgotten what real war is all about and their token toys they call military defense will be useless against a salvo strike. The enemy has this mindset no matter if you are talking about Russia, China, North Korea, or Iran, they will salvo and then use precision to render the rest incapable of striking back. Meanwhile the American people who have had their heads us their arces for the last 50 years will wonder how and why they are now so easily defeated. The answer is due to political BS in Washington DC that we have had to endure as both Democrats and Republicans sold out the country to gain personal wealth and power.
I served my country and it makes me sick to look at our youth today who have the patriotism of a nat, and they couldn’t pass a physical if they had to, much less do as others have done for the lat 250 years. That’s alright, we will all go out in a blinding burst of light and be nuked into dust quickly if the Democrats succeed in their desires. Were right on scheduled for a national failure just as countries have before us at the 250 year mark.

i agree. i’ve taught in north carolina public schools for the past 17 years. we’re screwed as a country and it IS because of failed leadership and a leadership/statesman void. the youth, when they aren’t being mesmerized into zombiehood by social media and contraptions, have no decent role models in Washington to encourage and inspire them. we are screwed. when we are invaded, which i’ve warned my students about for a looooooong time, these kids will come out fighting with their x-box controllers and making bullet noises at the enemy. we are laughably weak as a nation. we are feeble. we are soy.

Barnaby’s I can tell your a dumb ass teacher who it teaching our children we are doomed and stupid. America is the strongest country in the world and will remain that way with Trump’s leadership. Go take your Truvada pill and shut up.

Station more intercept missiles everywhere we can in the Pacific, And then place multiple (1000) missiles in the Aleutians pointed toward China.

A three time combat vet I say this. If the world is ever faced with this, and it’s probable, there will be no winners. The world will be blown off it’s axis. One aircraft, one ship is capable of doing more destruction than all the weaponry used in WWII.

The comments by LMB and DB are very cognizant of the current situation. I served in the 60’s and, while are troops are now better educate, the American soldier is not as strong as those that went to battle in WW1, WW2, Korea or Viet Nam. Too many of us are softies.

We have some technological superiority, but not enough to win without a great loss of personnel. I love and respect our troops, but I have family serving and I am concerned.

Okay, so lets say we can’t beat them and they for some insane reason decide to attack us.

So who then will purchase the billions upon billions of dollars worth of their products that we now do? Does anyone really believe China wants to dominate or destroy the US? They would destroy their own economy in the process. No, they will incrementally try to seize more and more territory from their immediate neighbors, without provoking a full-on military response from us. THAT, they could do, because we won’t engage them in that scenario, other than perhaps some temporary sanctions and condemnation in the press. They need us as a client, as buyers for their products, and to engage in trade with other nations that we support.
