Only two of the ten House Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump after the January 6th riot have any chance of remaining in Congress after the November election.
With four of the impeachment voters retiring and four losing races against Trump-endorsed opponents, that leaves only Reps. Dan Newhouse (WA) and David Valadao (CA).
Rep. Newhouse emerged victorious from an eight-person race in early August after using his background in the agriculture industry to distract from his impeachment vote. He defeated Democratic opponent Doug White by less than a percentage point, but came out four points ahead of Trump-backed GOP rival Loren Culp.
Rep. Valadao, the only impeachment voter who didn’t face a Republican challenger with Trump’s support, defeated Democratic candidate Rudy Salas by nearly 20 points.
Rumor has it Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), district neighbor to Valadao, urged Trump against endorsing a challenger there given the region’s political climate. Valadao represents California’s 21st district, which includes Kings County and parts of Fresno, Kern, and Tulare counties. He served in the House from 2013 to 2019 before losing the seat to Democrat TJ Cox. Valadao narrowly won a 2021 rematch despite the region’s support for Biden in the 2020 election.
This year’s redistricting gives Democrats in California’s 21st district additional advantage as we move toward midterms.
The other impeachment voters are:
- Rep. Liz Cheney (WY) – lost primary to Harriet Hageman
- Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (WA) – lost primary to Joe Kent
- Rep. Peter Meijer (MI) – lost primary to John Gibbs
- Rep. Tom Rice (SC) – lost primary to Russell Fry
- Rep. John Kato (NY) – decided not to run for reelection
- Rep. Adam Kinzinger (IL) – decided not to run for reelection
- Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (OH) – decided not to run for reelection
- Rep. Fred Upton (MI) – decided not to run for reelection
