For the longest time, I have been avoiding watching any news on television and just sticking to the printed word. I have made this decision based on my emotional responses to things said on cable news which have been so ridiculous it borders on farce. However, I have been enjoying the latest and great of the Mainstream Media Circus: the discovery that cable news networks are in it for the ratings and not actually reporting the truth.
You don’t say! We have been aware of this farce for quite some time we have just been ridiculed and demeaned for even suggesting the media has little credibility.
We knew it from the Monica Lewinski scandal to the Russia Conspiracy that 24-hour news agencies, and all agencies really, have deadlines to make, articles to sell, and scoops to grab. We know how low they would go to achieve this and that includes making things up. In addition, they are factional and partisan and seek to convey things through certain ideological lenses. In other words, they’re propaganda. It shouldn’t even be newsworthy but it is because it is the first time there was nowhere for the agency, in this case CNN, to slither away to.
CNN was caught straight up making something, it was forced into a formal retraction and apology to the subject of the case, and forced the resignation of three of its editorial board. So, in other words, we have known about this for decades just those who blindly believe everything the media tells them have had the terrible shock they’ve been lied to.
THAT’S the story.
More people figured out the big media’s horrible ethical environment and how journalism has been dying a slow and ignoble death in American politics. It isn’t a shocker to most, but it is a juicy watch.
Here’s what happened:
It all began with a hit-piece put out by CNN involving a member of the Trump administration and a Russian bank. According to the story, Thomas Frank, a CNN reporter, reported that the Senate Intelligence Committee was investigating the Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), a Russian investment firm. In addition, Frank also stated, this firm “whose chief executive met with a member of President Donald Trump’s transition team four days before Trump’s inauguration”, had connections to the Russian government and the Putin regime. They also attached this firm with the Russian national bank Vnesheconombank.
Hard-hitting evidence except, none of this was true and beginning with a Breitbart refute piece all of the little bits of evidence began to fall away and CNN was forced to retract it and apologize to the Trump official, Anthony Scaramucci. With such a public display of “fake news” the Trump administration and right-media alike jumped on this like a three-legged gazelle. Three editorial staffers were forced to resign, although it is disputed whether it was done voluntarily or not. It led to Mark Zucker putting out an internal memo that said all Russia related scoops had to go through him from now on.
But wait, there is more. As all of this “fake news” stuff was festering, Project Veritas, led by the sneaky James O’Keefe, had been conducting an internal, and undercover, investigation into the workings of CNN. So far two separate videos have been released by Veritas of CNN officials saying that the Russian story is, and I quote, “bull….”, and that it is driven by Zucker and by attaining ratings.
In other words, we now have unaltered direct documentation of people at CNN saying that they make stories up for ratings and that it has nothing to do with finding out the truth. The first video exposed CNN producer John Bonifield who confided unknowingly that the Russian Conspiracy is mostly fluff, but that Zucker wanted it kept going, even at the expense of coverage of the Paris Climate Agreement, in order to keep up ratings.
The second video, released today, exposes well-known CNN contributor Alex van Jones calling the Russian story a “nothingburger”. You wouldn’t know that watching him on TV but that’s what he’s going around saying when he thinks no one is listening.
I know this is of little shock to many of you but you should still be happy about this. Before this scandal, it appeared that so many people were going to be impossible to get through to because they have taken all this stuff in as gospel. Now, at least, some people might start watching this stuff with a huge grain of salt.
Whatever the case might be, this is important because having a free media is important. It’s what keeps the government at bay and the world at peace. That has stopped and both things are becoming turbulent forces. It’s easy to hate the media, but they must exist for the sake of a free democracy. Which is why it is both sad and dangerous that the media has become this.
Maybe things will change after this. Who knows? Probably not, though.
