Last night on Jimmy Kimmel, Trump was asked if he would consider holding a debate with Bernie Sanders. Trump readily agreed, on the condition that it be a charity event and that Sanders contributed.
Shortly thereafter, Sanders tweeted “Game On. I look forward to debating Donald Trump in California before the June 7th primary.” The event has not yet been scheduled, but is likely to be late next week.
Somehow we do not believe this was a spontaneous exchange. Trump is a master of public relations and a temporary alliance with Bernie serves to bring positive attention to his campaign and negative attention to the Clinton campaign.
This comes on the wake of Hillary Clinton breaking her promise to debate Sanders before the California primary. Sanders is still fighting tooth and nail even though it is statistically impossible for him to win the nomination in delegates. But this is the kind of event that throws a wrench into the works. The odds are long, but should Bernie win the remaining states, and should Hillary be indicted on the email scandal, it could give him a shot.
As we see it, a Trump debate against Sanders marginalizes Hillary and makes her look small. Being left out of what promised to be a major media event is a big hit on her campaign. In other words, Hillary has been outmaneuvered.
We are also predicting, just to take the controversy up yet another level – Megyn Kelly will be one of the moderators.
